Welcome pickstock.

If you are looking to do fundraising for scouts, set up a collection point for electronics then resell the scrap for a profit. To maximize value the scrap should be broken down and separated. I do not know the age of your scouts, beware that there are sharp edges of sheet metal and some other hazards involved. You will need to do your due diligence here first.

I cannot imagine actual refining of electronic scrap with kids about and being safe. You could however set up some controlled experiments using single elements and their reactions. Silver cementation is rather benign and very visually attractive.

Welcome to the forum.
We have many members who never post but that's fine, those of us that do try to help and point people in the right direction and get them to do the necessary work and study to be successful.
There are many ways to use the knowledge that's available here and if you decide actual refining isn't for you there are threads and posts about what items are worth looking for and then either sell as is or send for toll refining.
By running fund raiders for a good cause you could learn a few things and give the scouts a way to help themselves and the group, you also have a built in workforce to dismantle any e scrap.
I seriously doubt you want dangerous chemicals and acids around the kids but you can still get into the recycling business, try looking for Joem,s thread about advertising and check out sources of values. You will probably make more money from the base metals from computers than from precious metals especially with a free workforce but it can be all used for the common good and if you can source free scrap the profits will all help fund the group.
To give you some pointers as to the actual refining part start with the safety section here on the forum also read C.M.Hoke, available as a free download off many members signature lines the same applies to the forum handbooks, visit or own Lazersteve,s site and watch the videos, excellent teaching tools. We also have members that advertise their prices for various types of e scrap to give you pointers as to the value of the items you can recover and sell.
I wish you luck and hope you manage to raise some funds for your group.
