I was wondering if anyone in my Area has any new idea's of how to get scrap(marketing, pay out, auctions, ect)....I have capital and am looking to expand if anyone is interested in doing the same lets chat...I am in the process of creating a jewelry auction once a month and was also interested if any other members have dabbled in anything like that...Thanks in advance Brian

Well I'm a few states over, but the ideals of scrap are the same all over, and if I was in your area I wouldn't give you any ideas. (although I do go to MN once a year to bow hunt). my first thought would be to diversify into other areas of scrap. If the jewelry markets are tight then why not venture into electronics, or dental scrap. Cash for Gold is around 13% of spot, so you should be able to pay 15-20% and steal some business from them. Craigslist is also a great place to separate fools from their money.

The ideas on this forum are free for all. There is nothing that says you have or need to give information to help another member. But that shoe fits the other way as well, if you are not willing to help a fellow member then who is going to answer your questions when you have any.

Why be crooks like cash4gold? The people they buy from have no idea they're only getting 13%. If you only pay 15-20%, you're still a slimeball crook. To me, there's a threshold that separates the crooks from those that are honest. In this case, I think that threshold is about 70%, more or less. Anything much less than that is getting into the realm of thievery and thieves aren't welcome on this forum.

I agree. And word of mouth advertising works both ways. When it is saying you are a crook it you will lose most of your business. And 13-20% of nothing is nothing.
Positive word of mouth brings you a percentage of something, and repeat customers.

One of the best customers I had in the computer business came because
of truth. He had a pile of banking terminals and printers that were "hot" in
the market back in the early 80's. When he told me what he had for sale
I got really revved up for they were in high demand. I asked him what
he wanted for them and he didn't seem much interested in them. He just
wanted the space. His offer to me was about 25% of what they could easily
sell for. In a split second I had to make up my mind to take advantage
of the situation or to simply tell him the truth about the value of what
he was selling. When he heard me tell him what they were worth and
that I offered him triple what he had offered to sell them to me for,
I had a customer for life (or at least until he retired 10 years later.)

I ended up making more over the next ten years with him while saving
him money than I could have made on that one deal. For when he
eventually would find out the true value of what he had, he would
have known that I had "taken advantage" of his naivity.

I was almost asleep when I wrote that comment about helping and although it was meant as joke I can easily see now how that it looks to be a serious comment. I work with several others in the area around me who deal in deifferent aspects of the same buisnesss, so i am definatly not against helping others. I appologize if I have offended anyone.

I have never stolen anything in my life. I know nothing about the scrap jewelry market except from what I have read. If 70% is a fair price to pay for scrap jewelry then I am in no position to buy jewelry as I dont have the tools or knowledge at this point to determine the true value of a piece just by looking at it. If I payed 70% I would probably be the one getting ripped off

I have a very dry and sarcastic since of humor and I realize that in print it dosent allways come accross as intended, so I appologize if I have offended anyone

I am sure you didn't offend anyone here. You just had most thinking of you and Cash4Gold in the same light.Good to see that that isn't true, because Cash4Gold is at the bottom of the barrel, not much better than an outright thieves.

I deal in cell phones for scrap and re-use/parts, and I use this same way of doing business.
My customers love me and refer me to other people.

Good for everyone.

I was asking about expending.. not scamming..I already pay the public at a minimum of %80 all the way to %92...I should rephrase...Im looking for partnership opportunities, or possible ways to reach more prospective clients...As a gold Buyer I know as well that you have to have a niche or you will be out of business..Im just looking for input and not here to steal business....I also hope to contribute what I can going forward as my volume has picked up over the last couple months...I reached 100k in sales last month..YES!!!!!!!!!!!
