Is the typical wire found in a computer considered "low grade copper" by most scrap yards? I'm talking the wire that is coming out of the powersupply, and the ribbon cables too.

Is there a list of what is usually considered low grade copper? Would the Degousing wire around monitor tubes be low grade too?

I was told that my entire trash bucket full of 55 pounds of copper wire from computers was low grade wire, and only got 50 cents per pound for it today. I was expecting much more than that :-(

What are you guys getting per pound of copper insulated wire? Did I get taken badly today?

thanks all!

all the wire at my dealer is the same price, $1.10 a pound

ribbon cable too? They said that high grade wire was $1.25 a pound. Basically to them that's Romex, and any other solid core wire.

damn... I got taken today.... :-( oh well, live and learn.... I'll be calling around next time I bring wire in, that's for sure!

They did say they'd take my dozen monitors for nothing.... I'll be damn sure to strip everything out of those things except for the tube before I bring them down! ;-)

thanks!

seperate the enameled/lacquered wire it is number 2 and about 2.30 give or take per lb.

Yes, I am back from vacation.

Got, skunked prospecting. :(

so it's *really* worthwhile to remove the electrical tape from the degausing wire bundles!

Really easy to strip that tape off with an x-actoknife, and there's 3/4ish of a pound per monitor

My yard is not so picky about tape and even some actual insulated wire from the terminal leads. I have been going to the same guy for years so we see eye to eye.

yah, I'm kinda torn both ways for this last guy I brought stuff too.... he said that he'll take any and all monitors from me for nuthin, if I sell him my copper...

I suppose I could bring "some" copper to him, and a *lot* of monitors to hom to eaven things out... but if he's only gunna offer me 50 cents for the EC wire, when it should be 2.30, I won't be bringing that stuff to him....

That price only applies for the wire that has the super thin laquer/enamal coating, the type you find in transformers, electric motors, the coils on the tube from TV's

Yup, that's exactly what's in 99% of the degausing coils that I've been pulling out of monitors. Out of about 40 - 45 monitors, so far only one had plain-regular insulated wire going around the picture tube.

The yolks on the tubes have the same type of wire.

I figure in a typical 17" - 19" monitor there is probably 1.5 - 2 pounds of EC wire within it.

I had a lot of it in my barrel that I brought in.... If I had only known it's true value.....

although unlikely, the guy you are selling to may not know either.

yah, very unlikely I'd think. They are a very large scrap yard in this area, been i nbusiness for decades....

He's a nice guy and all, and I'll prolly still bring a box of regular insulated wire to him along with a truckload of monitors for him. I'm sure he gets paid something for the monitors... even though they're stripped of everything except the CRT and case :)
