collecting rocks and minerals has been a hobby handed down through generations of my family. I recently aquired several specimens, Geodes, Petrified wood, all types of quartz, zeolites, rhyolites, etc. Upon inspecting on my the specimes I noticed it was impregnated with soft, malleable, yellow metal. As I picke doff flaked, a lot of dust was separated as well. I cannot find any commercial assayer to assay/ refine what I have which is basically ore sands fron Rhyolite/gold formations. I think there may be either silver of platinum as well. So, being unable to do anything with my "sand" and not having a commercial refiner to process it I am exploring doing so myself, or finding someone to show me how. I have other bits and ends of ores, and I do recreatrional prospecting regularly.

hi,
I'm a newbie here, but I am familiar with mining. First, if you have found a claim on private property you are entitled to a legal discovery royalty-- a percentage. But all material must be returned to the property owner with a clear disclosure and get a signed copy of the reciept of the disclosure. In treasure trove it used to be 20%-- not sure, but this is not about law, only an Idea. If the land is BLM which used to be called "public" as opposed to private, you need to know if the claim can be filed or whether the area has been withdrawn from mining altogether. Silting of waterways and defacing of natural protected lands can get you in a lot of hot water. Ownership is necessary if your run an aboveboard operation, and I'd advise you to always do so. Being free is more valuable than having easy gains, though mining is never easy and the gains are usually less than the expectation. Gold is dangerous to even talk about today.

Just a few words of, I hope, welcome advice--no doubt if you are a rock hound you a already ahead of me.

One way to find left over gold is to search old legal or illegal mill sites on legal prospecting ground. The area may be claimed
so check at the county first. With gold topping 1600/oz people will have rangers watching their claims and any threat or act that can be interpreted as threat could get you in a serious jamb. Sheelite or other metal ore prospecting is a safer bet.
