I have a very short window in which to snag this from a person. Can't find really anything online about what is inside it. What I do know is that it is from 1948 and it's called a short wave diathermy. Any info is appreciated

If working, a medical device collector might be interested. Personally, I would not expect much in the way of precious metals.

Time for more coffee.

It appears to have all the hallmarks of one of the quack machines sold from 1900 on into the 50's. RF emissions are used for gas lasers or were in the 70's and 80's. Shielding could be an issue with ionizing radiation if there are any leaks that spray electrons against a metal plate, chassis, or shielding.

You may be able to use this to construct a working flux capacitor! Now you just need to grab an operational Delorean!

But it is a neat-looking device. If it's cheap enough, grab it and use it for study. These machines are actually still made today, and are used to generate targeted deep-tissue heating. They can reach up to 2 inches inside the body with their electromagnetic fields. It has valid uses for conditions such as kidney stones, tendonitis, and inflammatory joint diseases.

Several other types are now used aside from short-wave RF: microwave and ultrasound-based.

Short-wave and microwave types can both cause extreme heating of any metal prosthetics in the body, by electromagnetic induction.
