Hello everyone, I'm glad to have found this forum. I'm considering to embark on the journey of refining. I've run a foundry for more years worth considering and I think this might be a useful string to our bow.
No time like the present, I believe, as we are probably entering into another precious metals bull market.
Am I mad or will I be glad? What say ye of this matter?

Welcome to the forum.
Your experience in running a foundry will surely be a great addition to our collective knowledge.

Hi, Welcome to the forum.
There is always a good time for learning something new. So please share your knowledge with us. I personally, am always open for something new.

Pete

Welcome,
if you tell us just what you want to take in to refine and how far you want to go with this we can surely get you started on the right foot.
I'm looking to reach out to my existing customer base, jewelers, to offer them the additional service of refining their sweeps & scrap items. So basically all types of precious metals. I don't know what type of scale we will be running at if we are successful in capturing their business to a good degree but I think starting out small might be a good place to begin, I would hope to be in the region of refining about 1 kilo per month range, as an amount for fine gold recovery, after about 6 months, then scaling upwards from there.
It's hard to come across any off-the-shelf solutions though, other than the i.shor equipment, maybe I haven't looked hard enough. They make it seem easy though, to get started that is, but I have my doubts that it's ever that simple.

Jewelers sweeps, karat scrap, and jewelers bench filings were the predominant types of feedstock when this forum was started so there is plenty here we can link you up with so we don’t have to answer basic questions over again.
On a small scale it pays to chemically refine your sweeps to get the gold quickly. If your quantities increase substantially we can detail how you burn crush and sift and ship them to get better rates. But that requires volume. Your biggest issue may be selling your refined gold. If you give us more specifics as to where you are located (general location is fine) we can suggest some gold buyers nearby who (may or may not) treat you fairly. But we can show you how to process your gold and silver and how to at least be aware of how well or poorly you are treated by the gold buyers.

Don’t go down that road. You can do better and cheaper right here!

What 4metals said - DO NOT go down the Ishor road !!!

To put it a bit more in perspective
The iShor system should work for refining but what most members have a problem with is they take off the shelf chemicals that they buy in bulk for a buck a pound, give it a fancy name so you don't know what it is, and mark it up 500 to 1000%.

We don't do any of that hocus pocus fancy name stuff here, all our methods are documented and there are no hidden secrets.

If you do a search here on the forum for iShor you will find 7 pages of info going back to 2007 where iShor has been discussed & debunked for the scam iShor is ------------

Since you are starting out I suggest you start a thread in the Refining as a business section about one of the topics you want to start with. From years of doing this I have learned you will be most successful if you stick with one topic until you are satisfied with the help you will have received. Keeping aware of posts daily and responding will get you the best participation for an active thread.

A good place to start is by defining what equipment you have in your current operation so we know what capabilities you have to begin with.

And title the thread thoughtfully so members know basically what the thread is about from the title. This particular thread you called “new fan”. Now from the wording one would think it’s about a blower or exhaust fan. But since it was posted in the introductions section you get a “get out of jail free” card for that! But appropriately named threads get better response.

That is a valid point, I'll start up a thread that is more relevant, and thank you there for all of the pointers you've given me.
It's good to have some heads that have been long in the refining game.
I won't have any issues when it comes to selling my refined material and I ultimately plan to make products from it, which will come in time of course but first to take the big step into refining the alloys.
I'll start up that new thread, instead of continuing this one on.
