Hi everyone,

I am an engineer by trade and looking to getting into recovery and refining of precious metals.

Have downloaded the CM Hoke book so plenty of reading to do, is there any other material you can recommend before i start this learning process?

I have a regular supply of high end plated door & cupboard furniture, thicknesses are 0.05 & 0.1 microns ( i understand plated jewellry is 0.0125 microns) hopefully this would make it worthwhile as well as fascinating.

I will post some more detailed questions in the relevant forums.

Welcome in.
This is the place for all kinds of Refining of Precious metals.
Here you have a reading list

1. Read C.M. Hokes book on refining jewelers scrap, it gives an easy introduction to the most important chemistry regarding refining.
It is free here on the forum: Screen Readable Copy of Hoke's Book
Obviously you already have this so drop the download.

2. Then read the safety section of the forum: Safety
3. And then read about "Dealing with waste" in the forum: Dealing with Waste

Suggested reading: The Library

Understanding the basic chemistry involved in gold recovery and refining will help you to work out what process or processes to use to recover and refine your gold , this often depends on the base metals under the gold plating.
I hope you noticed that I split the two processes of recovery and refining , the reason is that learning the recovery methods and processes are far more important and can be more complex than actual refining , if you can do clean recoveries you can very easily refine those values.
When reading Hoke take note of what she advises about how to remove base metals this will help you in making decisions of your own.
