I am a veteran and an environmental activist with a gold refining fixation. I have been studying and practicing but I haven't even turned over a single gram of gold yet. I'm new on here and I won't be active much until I get my new lab set up whenever that is, probably into next year.
I am completely enthralled by the idea of refining all kinds of waste and stacking silver and gold. I also enjoy panning and just the idea of gold as a philosophical topic. I think if I could get paid to talk about it I'd be set for life but talk is cheap so I'm gonna get busy.
I believe I have learned enough so far to complete the various processeses but I've only experimented a bit so far because I haven't been able to focus on it yet. Glad to be here!

Welcome to us and welcome to getting busy.
Almost all coming here and thinking they are ready to start, find out they are wrong.

Here is for your studies:

1. Read C.M. Hokes book on refining jewelers scrap, it gives an easy introduction to the most important chemistry regarding refining.
It is free here on the forum: Screen Readable Copy of Hoke's Book
2. Then read the safety section of the forum: Safety
3. And then read about "Dealing with waste" in the forum: Dealing with Waste

Suggested reading: The Library

One topic that should not be over looked is handling/disposing of your waste solutions properly. There is plenty of information here on that subject.

Do tell, please explain..
I'm not out here gluing my had to stuff or throwing soup on paintings. We hate those guys. I work with organizations protecting wild places but I'm new to all of it. My basic premise is that industrial civilization is killing life on this planet and the acceptable bounds of traditional activism will not work since those I power have a vested interest in destroying the last wild places everywhere. The main thing I support is building and networking human communities attempting sustainability, and resisting industrial society with all means necessary. That ties into gold because of the communities aspect. If our nation were to default on its debt, the turmoil would make it very difficult for land based communities to exist, unless they had real assets on hand. I think that's all I should say here, but feel free to ask me more questions if you want.

Well I'm humble, and I'm here to learn. I am the type to try something first, so I've done some smelting with my acetylene torch and some Mason jar experiments which I'm sure is frowned upon here given the emphasis on safety. I am already reading the Hoke book and others. Thank you all!

Please don`t take it as a personal attack, but planting a tree now and then will get you further than building and networking. The biggest problem about global environment protection is that everyone likes to talk about it, but noone would lift a finger to achieve something. This is mostly valid for the suits that are decision makers.
I plant each year a few trees with my kids, I teach them how its done, and why is it important. I`ll do it on my property and on public land as well, regardless if i get a permit (95% i am granted a permit) :)
