I understand roasting to oxidize pyrite but couldn't you just add it to a bucket with water and let it oxidize over time? You would still need to dry and grind, but it would be a low-cost batch method.
Roasting makes the ore brittle.
More oxygen can touch more ore in the same time through the fine cracks.
If you crush the ore after roasting, more surface is exposed to the air/oxygen.
You also can put it in a bucket of water or leave it in your garden for a year.
But in this world, nobody has time… ;-)
