I came across a whole box of old computer cables. For instance, there is a bunch of these:

both male and female. I noticed that the pins on the male connectors are shiny. Are these gold-plated? If so, can I scrap them like I would scrap RAM sticks or motherboards?

Thanks

My buyer calls them big head connectors.
He buys them for about 35-45 cents per lb.
You can take them apart and process if you
like.I just sell them as I have gotten some
nasty cuts trying to open some of those.
Not worth it as far as I am concerned.

I have also had a hard time trying to get pins from connectors. Anyone know of any easy way to dissolve the plastic used in these types of connectors or the plastic on hard disk connectors. Would be easier to recover the pins that way.

Most modern d-sub connectors seems only to be gold coated on the tip so I guess the yields will be very low.

this is by far not somthing safe... or economic for that matter...
as far as i know, dissolving plastic usually end up with gooey mess...

you would be better off thowing them complete to AP, just remove excess metal and wire, sooner or later the acid will attack the pins inside, liberating the gold foils...
