hey guys,

wanted to ask this question of y'all. I am about to go to a possible good source for material/scrap (computer parts/service company) and want to be honest with this guy about what I'm doing with it. what should the cut be to him in PM's? I was thinking 10 or 20%. I figure it's better to make good relationships with people if I cut them in on the prize. while keeping in mind my investment and time. just wanted to know how y'all deal with that.

I reckon you have that the wrong way round, a 20% retention for your work is about right and the 80% to your customer but that does depend on volume, small amounts your take needs to be higher and large volumes your take smaller. Your trying to tempt him to give you a steady supply of material to keep you busy so treat him well and be honest and it old be a good deal for both of you.

Depends on the place/source. Many companies are actually paying to have e-scrap hauled away. If you take it for free you're already saving him a ton of money.

I agree with rick. You can be honest about what you are doing with the scrap, but only if he seemed interested in getting a percent would I offer him a percent of the gold.

I think 80% would be way too much a give of your profit. I mean it's not like he's doing any of the work, and there isn't a huge amount of gold anyway. You are already most likely saving him money so he doesn't have to pay to get rid of it. 8)

If the potential customer has volumes I'm sure he has people phoning him constantly and he will be informed as to the value of his material. Best method is to find out what he wants and be honest with him, it also depends on exactly what you are going to take, will it need disassembling or breaking down if so that has to be costed in, if it's clean and easy to process offer good returns. My view it's better to have a 10-20% of something rather than 100% of nothing but it has to pay so the figures may need adjusting.

I'd tell him, I'll haul it away recycle it properly and keep it out of the land fill and it won't cost you a dime. Or offer him so much per pound, pay him cash and your done with him. You don't want people involved in your business any more than absolutely necessary.

well he wasn't there. I waited a while, but he left me two boxes of all kinds of good stuff
like old packaged giant gold plated connectors. a mess of them. and these old AMP limiters and interval oscillator boxes, they look super old, have two screws holding the boxes in and inside they have these old circuit boards. I'll post a pic later. I'm gonna track him down tomorrow for sure. thanks for the help!

figured out what they are, plug in's for old US army radios from the 70's. they got nice gold plated pins and it looks like maybe some silver stuff inside. have no idea what to do with these, what's worth recycling or not.

Weight what you got and deside on giving the guy something when you do find him.
That will be a nice suprise for him which will make him want to have you around.
Nothing major but something nice, like lunch money would work.
