I'm a little late doing this. I joined about 4 days ago and got engrossed in reading the threads first. Anyway,. I'm a 60 year old disabled vet that loves to read and experiment with practical hands on type stuff. I moved to southern california about 3 months ago and discovered there were a lot of abandoned gold mines in the area, so I started researching gold and it lead me to this forum. Very happy to be here and learning from people who have a lot of knowledge and experience with precious metals.

Thank you

Welcome, Ray. Hope you enjoy your visits to the board.
If you're interested in gold, you can do a lot worse than reading Hoke's book. She makes learning quite easy, even for those of us that don't have a chemical background.

Thanks Harold,. Hoke's book is on my list. I just got a copy of C.W. Ammen's book and want to read that first because I'm studying element/mineral identification and testing right now. I'll read Hoke next. :)

Hoke also wrote another book i don't think everybody mentions enough. It's called Testing Precious Metals  http://www.scribd.com/doc/14426836/Testing-Precious-Metals-CM-Hoke1
