Can't speak about the "new" plugs, but many years ago I recovered a respectable amount of platinum from salvaged aircraft plugs. The center electrode had a pin that was at least one grain in weight, with various configurations on the outer electrode (variations due to maker and plug type). Being a machinist, I simply parted off the outer portion using my metal lathe, then used the bits of steel for material in my stock pot. It was gradually eliminated, leaving behind the platinum.
Plugs can be a good source, assuming they are still made in similar fashion, and are not platinum in name only.
