zvone1,

Welcome to the forum. Based on your question, I would say you have much to learn. HAuCl4 is the chemical formula for chlorauric acid, which is an intermediate step in the gold refining process, not something you refine with. Fortunately you can learn everything you need to know from this forum.

The first rule is to be safe in everything you do. Before you jump into any of the processes you see discussed here, be sure you understand the potential hazards and do everything you can to minimize the risks. Read EVERYTHING in the Safety section of the forum, especially the Dealing with Waste topic. No amount of precious metal is worth jeopardizing your health or the health of those around you.

I strongly encourage all new members to follow the Guided Tour created by LazerSteve. It will provide an introduction to the forum and numerous valuable links including the General Reactions List. Be sure to follow the link to his web site as he has many outstanding videos, a collection of great reference documents, and he sells a lot of the supplies needed to get started including detailed instructional DVDs. Samuel-a also has a lot of videos, guides and tutorials at his web site Gold-N-Scrap.

Download C.M. Hoke's book Refining Precious Metal Wastes. You'll see her book mentioned repeatedly here on the forum for good reason. It is probably the best book ever written for the beginner who wants to learn refining. It is written in layman's terms and will provide a solid foundation that will help you understand everything you read here on the forum.

Once you understand the basics you can start to try some small scale experiments. If there's something you don't understand or you get stuck, there will be someone here to help you.

Best of luck,
Dave

Zvone1,

Welcome to the Gold Refining Forum! This forum contains some of the most experienced and knowledgeable members when it comes to refining precious metals from various forms of stock. This is a self help forum. What that means is there is a bit of self education required before the seasoned members here are more interested in helping you with questions and guidance. Below is a checklist that should be completed for your safety, the safety of those around you and property.

1. I would recommend you stop everything you are doing and read Refining Precious Metal Wastes by CM. Hoke. Below is a link to a download, here in our forum, where you can download a free copy.

2. You should perform the acquaintance experiments Ms. Hoke instructs, to better familiarize yourself with the different type of reactions different metals have with different acids and temperatures. However, before performing any exercise, review the MSDS Sheet for each acid in the exercise.

3. I would learn what the scientific names are for different acids. For instance, you should learn that Hydrogen Peroxide is also known as H2O2. Also learn the chemical symbols for different elements like Platinum, which is also known as Pt.

Once all of the above have been completed, you should then thoroughly go through the Welcome Tutorial thread located at the link below AND read through all the sections of the forum, in its entirety:

Our seasoned members here will know if you have done your homework and if you know the material from Hoke's book, Refining Precious Metals Wastes. Their willingness to help you greatly depends on their belief that you have successfully completed all of the above.

You can translate the book using Google Translate.

Joe that is not very good advice , Safety first , and before you give advice to use google , you should maybe try google translate on chemistry. Some people may take your advice to use google and can get seriously harmed.

One has to be very careful using google translate for Hoke or other chemistry books

I took a text for AP ( From lasersteve) and used google to translate it to Danish and then back to English

"April 2 parts hydrochloric acid, 1 part hydrogen incorrectly 3% dissolved copper and gold langtsom if it becomes heated"

the following errors came up AP was changed to April , the peroxide was changed to Hydrogen and slowly stayed in Danish ( langtsom )

regards scm

Hoke writes in pretty simple and clear english, - if you are not able to understand that, no video and no advice on the forum will give you the knowledge you need to do things in a save way. My advice: If you seriously want to learn, then use an online dictionairy and do your Hoke english exercises, as we all, to whom english is the third or fourth language, do it.

I am a bit confused, is this text you read here in your language, or in English, is it being translated, if it is being translated by a computer program what would be the difference in translating Hoke's book the same way? I know some words would not translate well, but wouldn't those same words have the same problem from another source?

I know it must be hard for those who English is not their language, but Hoke's book is the best book to learn the basics, If I wished to learn I would find a way to get the book translated where I could read it, I have never seen a video that could describe the principles as Hoke has, although the videos can be helpful also.

Butcher I read in English, and I believe that Solar also reads in English I know that some members read in there native language using translation programs ( often google translate in chrome or in Firefox. )

The problem using google translate is that google will not always find the correct meaning of a word, if one would use a chemical dictionary for the chemical stuff it would be a lot safer. Next to that if one uses google translate and there is a mistake, one will only see that if one would know at least the 2 languages.

using google translate on the forum will most of the time work , not always and only if people spell correct and if google will guess the correct meaning of a word.

I still think people should read Hoke rather then using video. Specially if there is a language problem as one may not understand all of the video , small things like "only ad a small amount " or " in small increments " "poor the acid in water "

some of you will have noticed a spelling mistake "poor" instead of pour the result of that mistake is that google will translate this to Danish : fattige opløses i vand
and for those who do not know Danish i will translate it ( poor people should be dissolved in water)

most english speaking people will understand that it was a typo and will understand the context and the meaning , google will not
