Paige,

Hot water will suffice for the clean up rinses. Do two or three to be sure the BDG is all removed. Hot ether would clean the gold flakes in one pass, but is delicate to work with and may not be available to you.

How did your batch turn out? Got any photos? What do you think of the overall process?

Paige,

You may have drained it off with the lower layers. Did you save your washes? If so put them in the funnel and see if two layers separate after sitting in the funnel overnight. If the layers were drained off before they fully separated, you'll have an oily layer floating on top of the washes which were drained prematurely.
