At one time, for a period of many years, the US Mint was the #1 refiner of high grade silver (sterling, e.g.) and gold scrap (karat gold, e.g.) in the US. It was a massive operation. They may have also done some platinum.
I once had a photocopy of a booklet or a section of a book that outlined all the refining procedures used by the Mint (San Francisco, I'm thinking). It was 8.5" x 11", so it was probably a stapled booklet published by the government. I would guess there were 40-80 pages, or more, and that it was written in the 1920s or 1930s - maybe a little later or earlier - maybe even the late 1800s. The processes were given in great detail with many photos of equipment, cells, etc.
I have searched many times for this excellent booklet on the internet. There is a History of the US Mint of about the same size and date that is available but that's not the one I'm looking for. If I knew the title, I could probably find it in a college library.
I know this is vague but, does anyone happen to have a copy or know where one is?
