Hello all, I'm new to all of this. I've been lurking around, trying to soak up all of the info that I can. Lots of info here! This morning I took apart a remote control and instead of gold contact points like I've seen in pics on here. It has what looks like a black coating over it? I guess I was under the impression that all remotes had gold contact points.

Hello warner...
I just got a large box of different remote controls apart. My monster-in-law loves helping to take things apart.

Out of 100 or so, maybe 10 total have silver contact points. Maybe 3 had gold plating elsewhere. The black contacts are carbon. No PMs. However, all is not a total loss. There is a few chips to collect.

She also took apart over 50 cordless home phones for me. There's a couple few worth processing but mostly cheap as expected.
They make that crap as cheaply as possible so aint gonna put much good stuff in them.

Remotes & home land line phones I throw directly into my low grade brown board barrels & sell to a local scrap yard for 20 cents a pound - not worth tearing down just for the board
