It will take a lot of lye and will not be selective for precious metals. It a really bad idea in my opinion even from a safety standpoint as lye will cause lots of heating which could melt your container if it's plastic.

If you are wanting to recover traces of dissovled pm's use more copper ( like a solid bus bar, not wire) soaking until the solution saturates to a dark chocolate brown color.
