The closed basket sides will not create any problems as far as have experienced. The gold is targeted inside the pile as well.
The challenge is making good contact.

I've found that with a copper basket, some parts will not be stripped and taking the basket out, shaking it a bit, and lowering back in the acid and then turn the power back on makes a lot longer lasting contact compared to stirring the pile while in the acid.
I'm currently stripping gold plated in a plastic bucket with copper electrodes stuck in the pile. It works for me. The anode is covered with a plastic bottle with holes to prevent shortage.
The buckets are double, with the top one drilled holes in the bottom to let the slimes through in the bottom bucket and make replacing the load easier.

If you don’t want to re-engineer everything, maybe just cut out a rectangular window in the side of the basket, on the side facing the lead electrode. It’s not ideal but as long as there is unimpeded access through part of the solution it should work?
