Just started refining this year and wanted to say thanks to everyone here. Great forum! I done some really stupid stuff refining gold, such as droping tin with my gold (what a mess) but was able to find the answers here on the forum and in Hoke's book. I'am on my way to my 1st ounce thanks to this forum. I have a couple of questions that i can't find the answers to
1. is there a link to donate to this forum
2. need to re-refine my 1st gold nuget has palladium in it and i would like to seperate it. used SMB to precipatate the 1st time, any sugestions for the 2nd. I was toying with the idea of using oxalic acid, but not sure yet.
Again Thank you all.

Welcome to the forum.

Being as how your new the simplest way to get your Pd out would be inquartation with silver and part it with nitric acid.

If you have sponge that has Pd, you can dissolve in Nitric Acid to remove Pd, but you should incinerate first to make sure there is no more AR, or HCl in your material. Doing a Nitric Acid wash will get rid of any Ag/Pd.

Thanks for your replys, as i said above I've done some stupid stuff refining, now I'am trying to repair them. what I did was melt gold teeth in a sulfuric cell along with with pins and I'am not for sure what is in the little nuget above, so i will inquat it and use AR them test it before droping it with SMB, I think. Going back to read Hoke again.

If it is not karat jewelry, why would you upgrade the silver to part it? You can melt it, pour it into shot, re-dissolve it in AR and selectively precipitate the Au with SMB, then take the resulting Au powder, decant, wash, dry, incinerate, digest in HCl to remove anymore base metals and if you suspect Ag or Pd being present, wash, incinerate to make sure there is no more HCl, then do a NOH3 bath, by incinerating you will ensure that there is no more HCl associated, and therefore prevent AR from being created when you add the Nitric Acid.

Nice work indeed. Great first post!

I would definitely recommend you follow Palladium's suggestion to inquart the gold with fine silver.
The Oxalic acid process, inspite being pretty and interesting is quite laborious and dangerous and one can easly get lost in a confusion.

Petsonally, since the button is mostly gold, I would cornflake, AR, filter clear, DMG, filter clear again, and finish up with SMB.

Steve.
