Hey everyone. I'm new to the site and still a rookie in precious metals. A little bit about me:

Name: Jon
Age: 26
Location: Cincinnati, Ohio
Occupation: Diesel Mechanic
Hobbies: Precious Metals as of lately, coins, cars
SS #: Sike

I've been scrapping electronics for the past 2 months now. I figure it's a good way to add gold to my silver collection since I can't really afford to go out and buy it in the amounts I'd like to (i.e. an ounce at a time). So far I enjoy doing it. I've put together close to 4 pounds of good, clean material that doesn't have a lot of excess junk...probably because I'm a little OCD  Anyway, that's a little bit about me. Time to navigate the index and start answering/asking questions. Before I do though, I have to ask...where do you find backyard refiners here? I've been looking for 2 days now and can't find anyone on here. I guess I'm looking in the wrong places. A little advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

Hey Jon,

Welcome to the site. You ask an odd question. Not that it can't be answered, but it's a bit upfront. Why are you looking for backyard refiners? Many on this site fit that loose definition (they refine in their backyard), but I wouldn't call them as such because of the connotation that "backyard" bestows. You'll find that the refiners on this site, "backyard" or not, are more professional than you would have guessed. Except for the distance it takes to get to their front door, they operate exactly as someone with a professional (to the eye) setup. Safety being the first priority. You can post an ad in the "Wanted" section. Where are you from in Cincinnati?

I live on the East side of Cincinnati in a little town called New Richmond. It's about 23 miles East of the actual city but most people will recognize Cincinnati before New Richmond.

I guess when I use the term "backyard refiner", it's simply just to separate the big, high volume, large factory refiners from the hobbyist, the "Do it Yourselfer's", the toll refiners...that sort of thing. A toll refiner is actually what I'm looking for. I had my material posted on Ebay at one time but I took it down because I've put so much work into gathering and breaking down what I have that I really want to see the result of the processing/refining portion. So, with all of that being said, I'll stick to seeking a "toll refiner" rather than a "backyard refiner" so that I don't step on any toes right off the bat.

Jon,

Welcome to the forum. It's great to have another Buckeye on here. I'm in the Milford / Loveland area. There are a couple of other members in the area. There are a couple in the Dayton / Kettering area, a couple more up toward Columbus, and a handful more scattered about through the rest of the state. Then there's Lou up toward Cleveland. He's the expert on PGMs.

How's it going Dave. I never imagined running into someone on here that lives so close. My girlfriend actually lives up off of Rt. 28 towards Goshen so I'm up that way pretty often. So where do you stand with precious metals? Do you scrap e-waste like myself? Refine? Invest? Speaking of refining, I don't know if you saw my last response but I'm looking for a toll refiner who works with small volumes. The closer to home the better. If you know of anyone I'd appreciate the info!

Welcome fellow Buckeye!

I have mainly been collecting and sorting as well. I have dabbled in the AP process and suggest that is a great place to start gold recovery for a beginner after you read Hoke's book.

Good luck, have fun and, #1 be safe!

Derek
