Certainly several here are scrapping gold filled watches and bands for the gold content. However has anyone else noticed some watch movements and parts of them (balance wheels and such) appear gold plated?
I have not accumulated enough of them to do much with but testing the movements that look plated with 10k acid indicates the are plated with gold.
The few I had after incineration, I soaked in AP. The movements, face, hands, and all. What I found left behind is very interesting. Some dark mater on the bottom my be silver from the plated face, but the best parts survived almost unaffected. The applied hour markers dots and bars from the face are largely untouched by HCL/Peroxide.
The surface of these pieces are etched and no longer shiny so I suspect they are a gold alloy. I would expect a brass alloy would be gone. Any thoughts?
Has anyone tested their left over watch parts?
