Vitamin C/Ascorbic acid to precipitate precious metals

I read that this compound can reduce to metal gold, palladium, silver and even copper.

My questions are: How does it work? Can it precipitate platinum and there other platinum group metals?
How much Vitamin C/Ascorbic acid I need to precipitate the precious metals?
