Whats up crew, first post on GRC. My question concens white gold. Is there a way the determine if the gold is mixed with nickel or palladium? TIA,

Welcome to the forum!

I am not aware of one that could be performed without using, at the least, a touch stone and AR.

Palladium in white gold was an anomaly when I refined, but a recent conversation with one of my old customers informed me that palladium is now commonly used as insurance against allergies.

There's a couple things that will give palladium away. Both involve tests by dissolving a miniscule sample. Testing with DMG will yield a bright yellow precipitant if you have palladium in solution. Testing with DMG and a drop of ammonium hydroxide will yield a pink reaction if the alloy contains nickel.

It is not easy to detect palladium in solution with gold because of the often similar reactions, and the fact that the gold reaction tends to overwhelm any other, such as platinum or palladium. You can precipitate the gold using a crystal of ferrous sulfate, then test with stannous chloride if that is your only choice.

One obvious feature is that gold that is alloyed with palladium will yield a very dark brown solution when dissolved, whereas an alloy of gold and nickel will yield a green solution.

Hope some of this helps.

Harold
