I have been looking for something I can do to combine my passion for the unused and 2nd hand and my desire to make $$. I found a link on ebay to a device to unplate gold...and the youtube video pointed me at Steves website. I've been reading..went to the flea market and bout a small batch of scrap to experiment with. Using the information I've gleened from Steve's website I plan to build my cell tonight, and begin this quest. I'm going through the MUST DO checklist now, and thought i'd start my introducing myself.

I'm pretty mechanically capable, so I think I have a good handle on building my cell, just trying to figure out the ins and outs of reclaiming the gold from the acid....I'll keep reading, I know the information is there somewhere!

Thanks for this forum...I'm hoping ot figure out how to turn this into a full time "Hobby"

I have Hoke Downloaded. I found the link on someone's signature line! :) I need to print it out, and read it in a paper format that I can make notes on and such.

My plan was to build my cell, as I continued to read. I have picked up some scrap at the Flea Market, I have won a few auctions on Ebay, with materials on the way, and we're going to an auction tomorrow to see what we can pick up cheap (If anything).

I'm lucky enough to have a fairly large garage to work in, as well as a basement with some rooms well suited for making a small "Lab" I'm excited to get started, but I still have a lot to learn.

My plan as I go is to create a sort of "play by play" guide so I can do it again and refine my process. I've been watching "Gold Rush" and this is an exciting way for me to be part of a huge machine that keeps eating up gold!

I'd like the challenge of making this all work, and learning something new in the process. My fiance is excited, becasue she gets to help buy (Or find) costume jewelry to scrap and or wear...lol

do you have any experience using acids? concentrated sulfuric acid is really mean and unforgiving. when you operate a stripping cell the resistance to the electricity generates quite a bit of heat.hot sulfuric acid will attack your skin immediately on contact and permanently blind you on contact with your eyes.be sure to read the safety section and get accustomed with some of the simple reactions before dealing with the more dangerous stuff like hot sulfuric acid. im not trying to dissuade you or scare you but make sure you know what you are doing before you do anything with chemicals.

One of the first things you need to learn is that handling acids in your living space is NOT a good idea. Not a good idea in your garage, either, assuming you have anything stored there (including your car) that has the potential to rust. Fumes from refining, in particular if you use HCl, raise all kinds of hell with ferrous objects.

Back to your living quarters----trust me on this one. A friend set up his lab in his basement. Walking in his house was a horrible experience. As time drew on, it smelled of acids constantly. Can't be good for your health, nor for anything in the house. The same problem with rusting will exist there, too.

Even with a fume hood, refining in your dwelling is NOT a good idea. That may not be true if you can isolate the lab from the balance of the dwelling, which isn't likely in the typical home. If nothing else, the heating system (forced air in many cases) will circulate the fumes throughout the house.

So where do you guys do your work?

from the videos it looks like lazer steve is in his basement.

i bought chemical gloves, i need to stop by grainger after the holiday and get a smock and face shield.

i work outside (weather permitting) i have a lean to shelter that's open in the front.i made a makeshift fume hood out of plywood and a 20" box fan that has held up for over 5 months now.im working on getting a variance so i can build a small shop.i have a 8x16 shed i use to put my materials and chemicals in,its sturdy and i can lock it up,not to mention my pit bull Chopper who looks like a 60# piranha with legs guards it.i have found that i accumulate alot of plastic jugs.i cant reuse them and i hate sending them to the dump,im wondiring if the recycling people will take them?oh well, anyway the only thing i bring into my home is finished metals so i can put it in the safe.

I have a fume hood and still wear a chemical respirator (can't be too safe). The filters need to protect against CL gas for the most part. And they DON'T last that long either, you need to change them out regular like, depending on how much your using it.
