I'm old enough to remember when scrap yards would clean off a small spot on an unknown metal then with a drop of nitric acid the nickle content would be revealed.

As an example the Chevy small block engines with either 010 or 020 cast into the engine block would indicate the nickle content.

Larger industrial engines were a mystery, but the acid always told a story.

Nickle added into the casting makes it more durable and wear resistant.

Also raises the scrap value.

I've been an Urban miner most of my life.

How to Identify a Small Block and a High Nickel Block on a Chevy

Chevrolet has produced the small block engine in dozens of different configurations since it was first introduced in the mid-1950s.

General Motors alloys all of its cast iron blocks with a certain amount of nickel, but for some time, cast them with a far higher nickel content than it does today.

The high nickel content made the block stronger and more resistant to wear

Early 1990's i rented space to a lab doing work for

Charles Edgar "Chuck" Fipke CM (born 1946) is a Canadian geologist and prospector who discovered the existence of diamonds around Lac de Gras in Canada

The lab was looking for indicator minerals that would lead them to the diamonds.

They panned out the following, then under the microscope.

Full article- here.

Minerals contained in the surrounding area give our geologists clues as to where diamond deposits may have formed. They are minerals that are characteristic of kimberlite but usually more abundant than diamonds (and therefore easier to find). By tracing these indicators, the source of the kimberlite, and potential diamond deposits may also be found.

The indicator minerals are also often by products of diamond mining and offer a potentially lucrative opportunity to processing companies. The main by-products of our KAO diamond mining is Olivine, Chrome Dioxide, Garnets and Ilmenite.

Stoneware scrap is not prospecting or metal detecting what are you talking about.
Ya don't say.

We have people on the gold refining forum who prospect for urban sources of precious metals.

E-waste tops the list, scrap gold and sterling, jet turbine blades, catalytic converters.

FYI, the forum has a feature where you can block a user.

I don't need to block you I'll keep posting Gold so you can learn from me. If I ever get into dumpster diving, I'm sure I could learn from you.
Gold forum member yvonnebug shows her dumpster score.

My best find was a flame thrower from WWII.

The heater element that ignited the napalm were made of platinum and there were spares tucked inside the handle.

Yggdrasil,
In my humble opinion, these urban prospecting posts should be moved to the "Where to find scrap" Forum.
They don't really fit with this thread and only serve to derail the topic.
The bulk of this forum deals with aspects of e-waste in all of it's forms and processes. It would be good to keep this small section focused on the topic of Natural Gold and Ore Prospecting and Mining.

In reply to southforks rude comment on dumpster diving thought it prudent to show just how profitable the sport can be.

I didn't say dumpster diving wasn't profitable and that photo in your younger years proves that it can be profitable it just belongs somewhere else.
Why the disrespect for yvonnebug, I can assure you she is much better looking than I am.

Big difference between actual prospecting and metal detecting for gold.

There's already a forum for metal detecting, and we have a very good geologist that is able to identify an ore sample of an out crop from an image.

For ore identification search threads by these members.

I know, my reply was to Goldshark if you check.

I'm just back home from an all day in town, I'm bushed and hungry.
And my brains don't work well just now.
I'll look into it tomorrow if somebody don't beat me to it.

I have to absolutely agree with AlaskaLes on this !!!!!!!!!!!

The VAST MAJORITY of this forum is dedicated to the discussion of PM recovery/refining from SCRAP sources

Then there is this one SMALL section dedicated to the discussion of PM recovery/refining from GEOLOGICAL sources

I for one have VERY MUCH enjoyed this thread started by Southfork because of my own interest in GEOLOGICAL PM sources & I in fact posted some replies about my own experience in THIS FIELD & in fact have been following this thread because of the absolutely AWESOME GEOLOGICAL finds by Southfork & my own interest in this field

Then yesterday I click on this thread to see what new is being said in THIS THREAD TOPIC --- only to find the TOPIC has been COMPLETELY HIGH JACKED by things related to SCRAP --- which is something I can read about &/or post about almost everywhere else on this forum

IMO - The TOPIC I came to read about yesterday when I clicked on this thread was COMPLETELY SPAMMED by B.S. COMPLETELY OF TOPIC

If I wanted to read about SCRAP there is a WHOLE HOST of other thread & other places on this forum I could have clicked on to read about &/or post about

Stoneware - If you ask me IN NO WAY has Southfork being rude to you - IN FACT - all he has done is try to point out that your posting HERE are COMPLETELY irrelevant to the TOPIC of this thread --- in fact - IMO - you are the one being rude by spamming his thread with B.S. that is COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC

I mean really stoneware --- how would you like it if you started a thread about a bunch of HIGH GRADE boards you have & then Southfork came along & SPAMMED your thread with TWO PAGES of his hard rock & placer finds ????

Some how I don't think you would like that - that leads me to believe that you SPAMED this thread WITH INTENT to do so --- are you jealous ????

the ONLY post you posted to this thread that is relevant to this thread is ------

@Reno Chris

THE REST IS SPAM

And for what it is worth stoneware - generally I enjoy reading what you post - BUT - HERE - you have taken the topic completely off topic & when you do it with TWO pages of spam - & then you call Southfork rude for pointing out that YOU are taking HIS thread off topic --- I can't help but believe it is done with intent

You have entire forum to post on for SCRAP discussion --- this SMALL part of the forum is about GEOLOGICAL discussion
these urban prospecting posts should be moved to the "Where to find scrap" Forum.
AlaskaLes is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT --- This thread NEEDS to be cleaned up to make it relevant to the topic started by Southfork --- EVERYTHING except the ONE above post by stoneware belongs elsewhere - NOT HERE

I am sorry for using so many CAPS in this post - but it really ticked me off when I came to read this thread yesterday & again this morning only to find that this VERY WELL DONE thread by Southfork has been taken COMPLETELY off topic with two pages of irrelevant SPAM

A WASTE of EVERYONES time

Kurt

Stoneware's behavior earned him a time out of about 6-months on another forum. Same routine different day went from funny in a sick way to anger and threats.
