Servus (as we say for hi and goodbye in Austria) to the GRF community. Am relatively new to recovering precious metals, started few years ago with scrapping copper/brass and have since developed an interest in collecting/sorting e-waste for future refining. For now am limiting myself to collecting old/vintage boards (Siemens CNC etc seem to have very fat gold fingers with quite heavy plating), PC and laptop RAM, medium-high grade boards from routers/laptops, etc. This is just a side hobby, but definitely a rabbit hole I enjoy reading and learning about as I go. For now am gathering, when I have enough plan on attempting some small batch refining (most probably with Aqua Regia), but have no fume hood so if not outside (covered area), may need to try make some rudimentary fume hood to make it safer (even then, this is planned for being in an outdoor/covered area).

All the best and thanks for having me,

Phil

Welcome.
Here are for your studies:

We ask our new members to do 3 things.
1. Read C.M. Hokes book on refining jewelers scrap, it gives an easy introduction to the most important chemistry regarding refining.
It is free here on the forum: https://goldrefiningforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=19798
2. Then read the safety section of the forum: https://goldrefiningforum.com/forums/safety.47/
3. And then read about "Dealing with waste" in the forum: https://goldrefiningforum.com/threads/dealing-with-waste.10539/

Thank you Yggdrasil,

Downloaded C.M.Hokes earlier today and shall read that, and yes will check the safety & waste topics also :)

Cheers!

Welcome to the forum.
Before you put anything in acid, tell us your plan to review.
Study the links given and study copper chloride leach on clean cut contact fingers without solder or components.

Of course! My grandfather had a factory after the war and I remember stories of barrels full of white phosphorus... safety is always paramount. That being said, am most disappointed to learn that a private person cannot buy even HNO3 in central Europe :( There goes the future plan, may have to get creative.

Most of us have to.
