Details of a small aqua regia refinery setup

Acid on Tap The hood on the right is equipped with 2 shelves to hold 5 gallon vacuum jugs with teflon dispensing valves to hold nitric and hydrochloric acid. The jugs are piped into drums of acid to use vacuum to suck out the acid and fill the reservoir as needed. Each drum has a vacuum trap...

    Fume hood design plans

We used this design for basic hoods. Usually we put them in the row, "clean" one for analytics and fine work/last refining steps, second "dirty" one for bulk work and dissolutions and third for silver refining (since it is advantageous to have separated HCL/chlorides/AR work from silver stuff...

melamine fume hood build more space? or better air flow?

As Eaglekeeper says those won't last long. That is why most of us make a plexi glass opening in the hood and keep the light on the outside. And if you make the glass front with hinges, make sure it is of plastic material. Or better a sliding mechanism without hinges.

melamine fume hood build more space? or better air flow?

...air you draw from the venturi and lowers efficiency. Outside air is nice, especially in winter when you have to heat all of the air in your shop. The air pulled through the fan is exhausted and the only air you have to heat (or air condition) is the extra air the venturi picks up from the hood.

    Steel Blower, Venturi setup

Does anyone have the calculation for above venturi setup? What venturi configuration (size of ducts, blower cfm) will provide the necessary cfm or vacuum to the hood? Thank you!

    SO2 gas reduction

When ever you have chosen your fume hood design, there is a way to visually test it to find any dead area's. Get a small metal container and put in a piece of a smoldering oily rag. Let the hood fill with smoke, then turn on the fume hood. The smoke can show you where your hood needs attention...

Such thing as a fume hood out the box ready to go?

Is that a vented hood or a filtered air hood? Some hoods suck the air through a filter and discharge the air back into the workspace. They are fine for certain organic reactions but the will not work with NOx. There is no effective filter for NOx.

    Fume Hood Fan Speed Doubt

...I have seen for the venturi. Since I don't know exactly where the 2 inch pipe needs to be other than just past the up hole from the hood I plan on making a temporary rolling cart to put the fan on so I can adjust the 2 inch pipe back and forth inside the 4 inch pipe. That way I can find how...

    The usual "Hello!"

Start slow, follow some building plans found on the forum to make a hood and possibly a fume scrubber, and even a small melt furnace for those first gold buttons. Most members will agree when you convert what was scrapped into a valuable gold button that you can touch and feel, you will be...

melamine fume hood build more space? or better air flow?

...my thinking about how cold Texas can get. Especially north Texas. As far as 1 venturi or two, I have no experience using 2 in the same hood and I always vented from the top center. One thing nice about 2 fans is if you have a lot of reactions in process you can shut off the larger fan if...

    Refining gold in mississauga

I doubt it. “Home based” and “refinery” don’t go well together, especially in a large urban area like the GTA. My lab in Scarborough does hydrométallurgy in a hood and limited incineration and even smelting, but you really don’t want plumes of toxic smoke wafting up into the air….

    Copper electrolysis under a fume-hood?

1: i don't. Sulfuric does not evaporate until extremely Hot. You dont need a lot of free acid in the electrolyte. Some hydrogen and oxygen can form if you run high current, but some natural ventilation will be enough to get rid of it. I turn the current down until it's below 'bubbling level'...

    Silver Chloride conversion success!

Hi Yggdrasil, Your post of a reaction scrubber in this thread is similar to the ones in the library ( article about building a whole hood scrubber ) but I could not find the original thread that those pictures were copied from. I’m sure there are many great ideas out there and the best way to...

Such thing as a fume hood out the box ready to go?

The hoods on the opening page of that link, metal hoods with epoxy lined insides, really do not hold up in a refinery. Those are great in High school and college labs but in a refinery, where buckets are left bubbling for a full week and NOx (scrubbed or not scrubbed) abounds they don't hold...

    A.I. designed fumehood

...fumes eat metal for a living. That's why fume scrubbers are PVC or fiberglass resin. You can make a very small fume scrubber that will handle your fumes from the reaction sizes you mention. Go to this thread and click on the searches mentioned about fabricating hoods and scrubbers. HERE

    Palladium Removal electrolisis cell

NOx is rather well behaved fume and a properly designed hood over the reaction should get the fume up and away from you. Hopefully through a fume scrubber.

Such thing as a fume hood out the box ready to go?

He got that from an injection molder rep. Not cheap for sure and it wastes space under the hood. I always liked to store waste acid in a 15 gallon drum under the hood in a sealed drum connected to a pipe sticking up thru a bulkhead in the hood drum. The waste drum was on a dolly and we could...

...train experimentations, bearing in mind the technique you have mentioned. I hadn't thought a small venturi setup could take care of an entire hood given the size so a dual system was always in play. Be it with a scrubber or without, Now Ive already carved a couple of holes as can be seen...

    Fume Hood Fan Speed Doubt

I understand that one. The current design I have is replicating what the fan part of that diagram does just with a 2 inch pipe going into a the 4 inch which seems to be working somewhat. I'm trying to understand what Yggdrasil is saying if I just basically eliminate the 2 inch pipe and run...

Refining Precious Metals as a Business-Startup _hood_

While we are still on hoods, if you do go with an IBC for your first hood (which I think is a great idea, thank you Orvi!) you may find it gets a little dark in the hood and it is good to be able to see the reactions, especially when you are looking for end points. A handy way to install a...

For Sale 10kg Devil forge propane furnace.

...This is why I do not like alumina silicate wool. Whenever I am involved with a refinery build, the melt furnaces are always in a good exhaust hood and part of the reason is to get any silica out of the area where the workers can inhale it. Silicosis is serious and deadly. When the wool...
