    Palm to head moment...

...possible reactions.and outcomes. My biggest concerns at the time was any toxic fumes that evolve from acids or possible spills that can and do happen. Turns out I should also have had active oxidation on my radar as I was doing an AP run in my garage and guess what happened.... every single...

    Finding the best method.

...you also create nitric acid back in solution. This can dissolve more silver and so on. When it's in silver nitrate form it is the.best time to evaporate down to concentrate the solution and get a higher strenght of nitric after conversion. Another way is in a silver cell. You can refine...

I have a bunch of plated crap

...dangerous. Cyanide, but not recommended for us ordinary people😏 The Sulphuric stripping cell is good for some materials but maybe not for all. AP works but it is not very specific to the regions it attacks so one might end up dissolving all the base metals. And it is best on Copper or Copper...

    Not sure whats going on.

...$2 to recover the gold foils from 2 pounds of gold plated pins & with nitric I would have those foils recovered in a day (compared to weeks using AP) Soooo - 2 pounds of run of the mill "modern" pins would recover 3-4 grams of gold (foils) in one day at a cost of (about) $2 --- the copper...

    AP Colour Question

...study more. Why did you start with HCl Bleach, it do not make sense. No use for bubbler in HCl Bleach, so why did you do this? What strength Peroxide did you use and how much? Did you add new HCl? To detach stubborn foils we use a squirt/spray bottle with water and put the item back into the AP.

    Magnetics and non magnetics

If its magnetic, most of the time it should be plated stuff, therefore IMHO a sulfuric acid cell would be the best practice. Less waste created, the acid is reusable and the gold can be refined with very little generated waste. Pete.

    Pin Problems

I haven't personally tried it, but I think the idea of oxidizing the pins before any acid process is a good plan. It doesn't require much effort and could potentially expedite the subsequent steps, as oxidized base metals tend to dissolve more easily.

Question about a process I'm thinking about.

Do not melt and dissolve in AP or nitric alone. Content of gold is that small you will produce extremely fine gold particles that you eventually wouldn´t be able to effectively collect by filtration or settling. Go with AP leach. Search the manual to AP here on the forum. And as sidenote, you...

Gold plating under green boards and caustic soda

I have quite a few of these very old HP boards.... I was going to depopulate them first, then place them in copper II chloride (AP). This should remove the remaining solder in the thru holes and the green solder mask (which is covering gold). I do not want to use NaOH. What do you fine gents think?

    AP waste

After you have green AP no need for the extra Copper. Only when treating the stock pot for waste disposal. Do as Michele said search and read the threads on AP method, Martijn has a post with some easy diagrams. And ditch the Youtube unless it is from Sreetips, Owltech and some other members...

    AP suitable components/material

AP solution works better on copper based material rather than nickel or kovar. Due to this fact, if the speed is your concern somehow, you can separate magnetic and non-magnetic pins and run them separately if you want. Otherwise, it is just a matter of time. If the time is not your primary...

    Quartz Gold?

...studying. And thank you for the feedback. You say the bleach will only last 24 hours? would it be safe to top up with 50ml peroxide 6%? To get my AP working properly? Or add the copper chloride: Green Malachite to the same ratio instead, the solution will still contains Hcl. Speed does...

Results from processing gold filled material

Yggdrasil is right, price and availability is the main thing. I prefer the nitric, but sometimes that isn’t an option. Nitric, when heated, is faster. AP works best when there is no rush or there is no other option.

    Red Gold Cementation on Copper?

Hi when you say flakes only present if copper has been used in process.. What are the conditions? This was my AP solution copper chloride with a gold slick? The copper would/may have been on the Electronic items I used?

    Please Help me!!

...I said in the first post. Put everything aside and start studying. It is not safe to continue before you understand what you are doing. For the the Cupric Chloride leach (AP), to a certain degree but do not heat it directly. Just let the background temperature fix that. But after you have...

    Gold Foam

...process & prefer as few steps as needed. How would you process this? (pic worth 1000's words:)) Nitric/Water then AR? I'm going to study up on the AP process & I understand Salt & Vinegar will dissolve with time (I have plenty). A friend has 27lbs of RS232 end to do. Just need to setup...

Gold Pin Refining - Solid Gold? Unexpexted Results. Help?

I guess the PCBs had solder on them? The tin in the solder reacts strongly with AP/HCl, copper on the other hand reacts slowly. Another possibility is that your AP went bad from the PCB stripping. Only CuCl2 is reusable over and over, if you have a mix of metals in your AP solution, it can stop...

E-waste scrap in chemical to be processed

I never used nitric as of yet, that's why I stopped and decided to ask. Only chemicals I used was AP, then water (which was my mistake), then HCL. So I took my mud, with paper filter, and boiled in HCL till the paper was gone, and got a nice coffee looking solution. I decanted that, mostly. I...

    AP or AR?

Looking for some advice like always I'm wondering if I should use AP on these or ar or AP then AR? Let me know guys. I'm just not sure what the plastic and the circuit board still attached if AR would be the best method. Which is the method I would normally go for with CPUs with the gold-plated...

Just began processing small gold pins (low grade) - help please

...By adding a nitrate salt to make AR, this volume has to be taken into account as well. If we put the pins into solution with HCl, say the form of AP, we need a given volume to hold those metals as well. The same volume required with the AR. This leaves little or no advantage as to resources...

    IC chips gold recovery

...Eventually you combine these two together and cupell at once. Some people just pyrolyze the chips, then sluice the powder and treat legs with AP. There is many possibilities how to do this. But with incineration/smelt/molten Pb/Bi dip - no AP leaching, no gallons of greenish-black acidic...

AP solution for removing ic chips legs

Hi guys, I have a batch of 4,5kg of plastic ic chips. I’m trying to remove legs with a bath of AP solution made of 3lt of HCl and 1H2O2 I know most of the legs are Kovar but I tried anyway, I added some copper wire to the solution hoping to form some Cu2. Now, it’s been 2 weeks (with no...

What is the best way to recover the gold plating from a block of copper base metal

Makes good sense to me. I often cut older style fully plated connectors in half to speed up AP. I’m never in a hurry really but I’ve had thicker plated stuff lay in AP for weeks with no reaction. Open up the base metals to allow the acid to work past the gold faster.

    AP waste

On the topic of disposal of used AP or should I say CuCl2, the questions I have from above discussion is in relation to putting copper rod in solution. Won’t CuCl2 dissolve the copper? Is the idea to get the solution completely saturated with CuCl2? Or should be testing along the way with...

    Gold Foam

...while doing this so you don’t risk locking up your Gold in gooey plastic. After that you can use dilute Nitric if you access to Nitric. Or AP it is cleaner and has no risk of creating Metastannic acid. Vinegar has no use in recovery or refining. Acetic acid and Salt forms a weak HCl but also...

Gold plating under green boards and caustic soda

I believe not, I have never removed the solder after depopulating by heat. Not much solder left then, but I always end up with some grey gunk. It has not bothered me much though. I guess it is a mix between Copper I Chloride and some undissolved Tin/Trash. It cleans up nicely though, but I never...
