When In Doubt, Cement It Out _cementation_

Only add enough nitric to dissolve the gold. Incremental dosing. But even before you get to AR, you need to recover the gold by separating it from whatever it’s bound to. Usually copper. For that you use AP.

    Any gold dissolved in HCl?

It is not necessary, the HCl will remove it eventually during the AP process. The Nitric together with the HCl will dissolve some of the Gold and create a paste of Stannic acid to bind the cemented Gold particles. It won't affect much of the Gold but it creates unnecessary complications.

    Silver and copper solubility

Separate before dissolving as always crap in crap out. If it is practical the best is separation before dissolving, and this is what I consider one of the few constants in our world. Whenever this is not possible then one have different approaches depending on starting materials. Sterling for...

    Iron, Copper, Palladium in AP

"I decided to take the magnetized pieces and plates from incinerated IC's and place them in an AP bath." According to the research I've conducted about AP, it reacts only on non-ferrous base metals but does not react on PM. Not sure how putting magnetic (and therefore ferrous) metal in AP will...

I forgot to neutralize! , help me please

Ok, thank you all, so I should treat it as other base metals in the AP process but when I want to filter the foils I now have that gray powder which will remain in the filter when I filter the foils from AP. So I had one dedicated small bucket with previously used AP but which did not have...

    Newbie

I haven't disposed of my solutions, I have kept the waste from the drop until I figure out what to do with it, and I've reused the ap, just topped it up. Everything I've seen so far had water added after SMB, before the gold precipitates. Videos aren't the most reliable source. Seems I've got...

Solution get darker after gold precipitation

I do not understand what does AP means. I first leached in diluted nitric acid than go for AR. Thanks

    Silver Peroxide

...I have access at work to a product called Supersil, which is a silver stabilized peroxide solution at 30%. We use it at very low additions (c. 60ml to a 500l tank) to sanitise RO water reservoir tanks. Would this product be suitable for use in AP, or would the silver stabiliser mess with things?

    Saturated AP filtering tip

I assume that would be possible. I usually like to just pour off as much acid from the bulk of the foils as I can, and then run the AP through a very dense filter like packed cotton, this usually gets all the gold and the gold that it misses will be recovered from the stock pot process. I keep...

Citric acid method gone wrong maybe?

NaOH is used to remove solder mask from PCB's before the AP process. It does not release the gold foils from the copper layer.

I forgot to neutralize! , help me please

Lead(pb) is one of the easiest metals to remove from AP or AR. If you follow good steps when using AR or AP the lead(pb) will follow the waste stream and not your gold. If it does happen to make it into your AR, it is still one of the easiest metals to remove at this stage.

    Purple color from stannous wrong?

How clean was your glassware and utensils? Small residues can create a weak AR at times. I have had positive results from using AP next to nitric on the same hot plate. The test results were very weak, and often questionable, but positive. A couple of times I have had HCl near a nitric digestion...

    Question about gold plated pins

Thank you for the reply, If I can at least eliminate the cutting them down part that would save some labor. I thought about the AP solution and was going to go that route but then I seen the acid cell and that seems to be the way to go with plated items....

Citric acid method gone wrong maybe?

Thanks rickbb I'm going to filter off and rinse the fingers and then chuck them in some AP

New to GRF (gold refining forum)/ my introduction.

...waste I have been making, I have just been trying to store My spent acids and solutions (stock-pots) In jugs and or other receptacles that seem appropriate. For later disposal so I can do it the least environmentally impactful way possible. I am not certain if I have needed to keep...

AP solution for removing ic chips legs

...Yes, i do know there is a lot of literature on the forum. Still, quick question. My first batch i have done, i have first done a HCL+H2O2 shots (AP) on the chips to remove tin / solder from legs. I did get the copper cementing on legs when i added more chips to the batch so i am not entirely...

    Mystery Solution Precipitates Ag20

...if it contained Silver Chloride in the first place. This is how it looks to me! What you seem to do here is reading and half understanding, then apply the wrong techniques to the wrong material. When the processes don't work, you try read the results in the light of Alchemy. Edit to clean...

    Hello hello

Good afternoon friends, Can Someone Kindly Point me in the Direction of the AP process? I have ALOT of ewaste, And I'm not 100% sure of the AP process. I am fully aware I will not have much from this but it's more of a hobby for me. Thank in advance!

    Entire RAM sticks in Cu(II)Cl

Do you mean AP or AR? Was there silver chloride in the filter and did it get exposed to sunlight?

What do you make of this?

i used to think that all legit gold had stamps, but apparently older stuff did not have any markings or stamps... I do have HCL, and 3% peroxide... do you think that would work? And if so are there any dangers mixing the two? i have no fume hood yet...

    CPU Processing Input

I pop the heat sinks off and throw the board in AP along with all my other plated boards, fingers. 250 cpu's won't make much gold at all.

    AP tumbler

I do a lot of pins and connectors. AP is my primary recovery method. I find that stirring every few days helps break things up and speeds the process a good bit. I’ve been kicking around the idea of a tumbler. Something that would rotate like a cement mixer set on a timer to turn for a...

My HCI/Peroxide solution is turning yellow

...peroxide, let it react and sit overnight, so in the morning copper is still left in the jar. Take this solution and use it as starter for the AP. If all copper dissolve, add another portion of copper and wait another night to react fully and spent all of the peroxide. No possibility of...

How do you know if AP solution is saturated?

Experienced chemists and -hobbyists can use these chemicals so that no problems will evolve. Beginners do not understand the fine differences, pro's and con's of the use of a certain chemical. That's why we have beginners recipes and procedures to get to learn this craft. The easiest way to...

    AP waste

Two semi failed attempts, maybe someone can help shed light on what to do next.

...base metals. Except platinum from my understanding. It may not be the "right" way to do it, but what I have started doing is starting with an AP solution of HCL and Hydrogen peroxide to dissolve base metals. (granted I'm working with PCB's and gold plated IC's, but I'd think it would work...

    AP waste

Are you ending your refining adventure? If not put it in a sealed container until next time. It can be reused. If you need to dispose of it, skip the copper step and go straight to Iron. This will take care of the copper. Read this: Dealing with Waste

    Question about gold plated pins
