Is it possible to have 18 gram of black powder from 3.5 cats

burn it until it glows and weight again.
Zinc vapors and CO2 will be discharged so do it upwind or in fume hood.

It's also possible you have Cab-O-Sil (SiO2) in the zinc if you used 150 mesh or smaller zinc powder. The Cab-O-Sil is added as a stabilizer when shipping powdered zinc. It's aso the main reason I switched to zinc turnings for precipitating my mixed PGMs.

Turnings also go a lot further than the fine zinc powder and is a whole lot easier to handle.

I would give the powder a good wash in 10% HCl and let it soak to see if you get any more H2 bubbles (very samll fizzing). If you do, then you definintely have excess zinc.

yes it might be possible,on the contrary of some coments from other members, i obtained from high grade cats(bmw,mercedes and some others) more then 5grams pgms per cat.
i use iron powder to precipitate my solutions and my powder cements perfectly and only sometimes with some carbon(from the iron)---lead that might be present was already withdrawn with h2so4 added in the leach solution--------

because strict anti polution laws and afraid of recalls,many car makers use more pgms in their cats then stated in most informatives---
what i wanted to say and extended myself,is that no one can reply a question without more information of how the process was done.
