Is there a minimum amount you should really attempt to refine? I have a little over 100 grams of gold pins and was wondering if it was too small of an amount to even bother with trying it. Should I just sell the pins on Ebay or save them up?

I also don't understand why I can't just use hydrochloric acid to remove the other metals, I figure leave it in it for a week as time is not an issue then just wash and melt it. My intention is to make a good friend of mine a little ring, so it doesn't have to be pure gold, just look nice.

I could say, try it and you will know, why not. But that would be a bad advice. Use the search function, read guided tour and read Hoke, before you start anything.

0.1g gold is enough to find in a filter, 1,0 g is enough to melt, - my opinion
