Hi everyone,

Im writing this hoping that I did something wrong in my ignorance and lack of proper chemicals. Please dont eat me alive... I understand I did this all in haste and in doing so have probably contributed to the lack of gold at the end of the rainbow. I found sreetips on YouTube and spent a couple of days endlessly watching and learning from his procedures. At the very least I am somewhat familiar with the process. Not that it matters since it seems as if I was fooled and then got all excited and now I have nothing to show for it.

So here goes.

I have some material that I have crushed up and sifted through a mesh to a fine powder. I weighed out a 1000 grams of it. this is probably quite a bit to start with but as I thought that this was gold rich material, because I could see in it with a jewelers loop what appeared to be fine gold powder, I figured even if I didnt get it all into solution at least I would get some of it. My goal was to get as much gold as I could so that I could calculate a percentage in my material and hopefully use the gold that I got out of it to help pay for my future materials. I wasnt really sure if all of the material would even go into the solution so I just figured id learn as I went. The material is an unknown, I have spent countless hours trying to figure it out and still I am unsure.

I should mention that I dont have any stannous and so am doing this pretty much on faith that the process should put gold into solution and with sodium metabisulfite precipitate it out. At first I thought that I needed sulfamic acid but I noticed that sreetips never used any in his videos and so I decided to proceed with adding the muriatic and nitric to the material. After an hour or so of heating at about 140 F this is what it looked like. IMG_0862 2.JPG

I gave it a stir and noticed that the gold looking material disappeared. I was a little shocked at this wondering where it went but I let it sit for another half hour or until it looked like the process was done. No more yellow brown fumes and bubbles and it had pretty much slowed to a stop. For whatever reason, mostly me being greedy and excited and thinking that if that gold material was indeed gold, that I might just need a bit more of it. So rather than pour the solution and undesolved material into a different flask I added an another 1000 grams of material and more muriatic 500 mls and added nitric slowly till it started off gassing that brownish yellow gas.

I let it cook for about another hour checking on it frequently and then took this pic. IMG_0868 2.JPG

I let it do its thing until it stoped letting off those brown fumes and let it cool. I siphoned off the liquid and poured a smallish amount into a mason jar and added the stump out until it changed from a green color to an orange and wouldnt take anymore stump out. I wasnt aware that temp or ph should be taken before the stump out. Ive watched sreetips simply add ice and then add his SMB so I didnt think this would cause an issue. The solution was warm not hot or cold. At First there was a reaction to the stump out and it took about 3 table spoons before it wouldnt take anymore.

No gold precipitated out. In fact all that happened was a white film formed, sort of a fatty or waxy film on the surface after I let it set for a half hour or so outside. It's cold out, 35 degrees ish. Nothing in the bottom of my mason jar.

Did I simply have no gold in the material? Can anything be said about the color of the solution? and what is that then that looks like gold on top of the grey material? I dont know, im pretty bummed and to not have anything precipitate out... is just a wonder to me. I know stannous would help but it's just one of those items I was planning on ordering if I saw any gold in my end result same thing with the sulfamic acid and more nitric.

Thanks for your thoughts and help... please dont eat me alive for my ignorance I mostly wanted to see if this was worth pursuing.

I'm in no way experienced enough to offer feedback on your steps outside of two things:

If you start with aqua regia (muriatic + nitric) as a recovery step, you're gonna have a bad time. It should really only be done as a refining step once you have a material that is at least 75% gold by weight, either in the form of an alloy or extremely fine powder from previous recovery steps. If you do AR too early it's easy to lose your gold in a heap of waste. (ask me how I know :/ )

Stannous is so so so easy to make that there's really no reason not to use it extremely liberally. Grab a little bit of tin (lead-free solder is a cheap and easy source) and toss it in a small vial of muriatic, wait for it to stop bubbling, add a little more tin, and you've got stannous. You can get the super precise stuff for other purposes, but for simply detecting gold it's easy to make in a few minutes with materials you already have or can easily acquire.

The only other thing I could add is to check out the mega-thread on cementation - I plan to deep dive into that probably next week when I'm processing all my waste. There's a lot of great last-ditch recovery tips in there.

Thanks for your reply I appreciate the insight into my starting material, I never really wondered if that could cause problems later on I guess I assumed it would be extra steps in the process to further refine the gold out. Cementing seems to be the better option and I have a bucket started so thats in the works and should help.
I had read that stannous needed a few more items, I could be wrong, and that sometimes it was hit or miss depending on how it was made and with what... but since I have muriatic and lead free solder I might as well give it a shot and see if it gives a positive for gold. Thanks I really appreciate that helpful bit and I'll let everyone know how it goes.

It appears you may be missing something.
What kind of material you did not say.
However 1000 grams of it.
Now lets look at this and calculate how much gold expected?
What is the material Plate/Filled?or Karat or ewaste (what kind)?
How much nitric was used?
I have a good feeling your gold is still in the solids.
Hope you have not tossed anything.
So lets say 1000 grams gold filled material 1/20th 12k = roughly 25 grams 24k or less because wear and tear on the gold filled.
That tells me 975 grams of base metals and a little silver and plus a little PMG.
Regardless it needs 2 plus liters of nitric to get the job done.
I'm thinking you saturated your solution with base metal and all precious metal fell back out into solids.
You have not finished the first batch.

Again I ask, you still have the solids from filtering right?

assuming your lead-free solder is tin with 1% silver, which is pretty standard, you should be good! Be warned that with excess sulphur dioxide gas (from too much SMB, for instance) you might get a "false positive" test which shows up coffee brown. I confirmed this by just adding a bit of SMB to some fresh AR with nothing in it, and the resulting stannous looked like mild coffee stains. Gold will look pretty black in comparison in my limited experience.

As Evan says, AR is not suited much for ores.
I can not remember Sreetips/Kadriver did ores?
Do you have an assay?
If not, so how do you know if it is Gold or pyrite?
Stannous is very easy just add some Tin to a tiny amount of HCl.
It is entirely possible you have no Gold in solution, hence the Stannous and before that the assay.

Anyway welcome to us.

Here are some material for your studies:

We ask our new members to do 3 things.
1. Read C.M. Hokes book on refining jewelers scrap, it gives an easy introduction to the most important chemistry regarding refining.
It is free here on the forum: https://goldrefiningforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=19798
2. Then read the safety section of the forum: https://goldrefiningforum.com/forums/safety.47/
