Good Day fellow Scrappers,

I have discovered a dumpster in my neighbourhood that the local cable company uses. Recently I have found a few line amps which have a lot of Cu coils, Au plated pins, ICs and MLCCs and that is all good. I have found two large line boxes made by Atlanta Scientific that house gain boosters - the boosters are not present but all the connectors are and these are made from high quality cast aluminum so with a little effort all this comes apart and piles up in the sort pails. The question is on the connectors and fittings. It is obvious to me that most of these are aluminum, some are plated brass but there are some mystery items. I have attached a picture below - I know some of you are going to suggest I apply test solutions (which I do not have yet) but what I am hoping for here is that someone is Larry the Cable Guy or that someone else salvages these. The item on the top left appears to be aluminum but is heavier than that for its size. A file reveals it to be a white metal of some sort. The little pin below and to the right of that item inserts into that item through a plastic bushing (has been removed) and it may be silver as it makes contact with the wire part of the large connector at the bottom of the photo. The item on the top right is what is removed from that large connector and it is also a white metal, dense and assumedly of high conductivity as it is THE connection from the large carrier lines to and from the gain booster. Any help identifying these would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jeff

When I bought my house, it had two competing company's cable installations on the side of the house. I removed them both myself as after a gazillion phone calls, neither company was interested. (One cable was underground. Don't ask how I removed the other from the street pole, but I'll tell you it involved my car, which had a towbar.)

Even though I wasn't interested in gold refining at the time, I remember both were chock full of aluminium. Maybe a touch of brass. I remember because it surprised me that they'd use Aluminium at all. When competition is heavy, every cost reduction counts.

Hey Jason, I live in southern Ontario here in Canada and things are a little different around these parts of the world - there is no competition, a company called Cogeco owns all of the infrastructure. There are different internet providers but they lease the lines, one way or the other you have to deal with Cogeco.
