I joined this forum a while back and learned a lot from the forum.. I have also been using ARA refinery for around 6 months now and today when I called them to check on a package they said that I can no longer send in packages because they can no longer accept from the public.. ( business only ) so my question is.. Does anyone know a refinery that will treat me as good as ARA did? Just mailing the package in with a note and having free stone removal was great

I called ARA today to talk to Nicki and she was out the office. She is supposed to call me back tomorrow so we can discuss what needs to be done to remedy these situations.

ok thank you.

they also told me to use MidWest but i have been reading on these forums that they do not treat you that good.. and the stone removal is something that was a very big bonus

Well this is interesting. Called yesterday and talked to the office manager i assume. He told me John was with a customer and Nicki would be back in today and that he would put the note on here desk. Even though i was adamant about talking to John or Nicki he seemed destined to handle the situation himself. I went to talking Patriot act and ein #'s and he went blank on me. lol I then gave him my new number and requested that he have nicki or john call me back about this problem. It's kind of irritating considering the promoting i have done in the past based on their outstanding service. Maybe they are just busy. We shall see.

yup i just called in again they are no longer accepting from the public.. need a Busiess

would you happen to know another good refinery that will accept from individuals? and all i have to do is wright a little note with the package and they will treat me fairly.

Generally the resistance to dealing with the public is that most local enforcement agencies impose a "hold time" on goods purchased from the public. For example, typical gold scrap buyers in areas of NY have to hold the goods for 21 days before having them refined. This is likely their issue.

You can go to a bank and open a "DBA" account (doing business as) and this will suffice to call yourself a business as long as all transactions go through the DBA account. Of course then you have to follow up with the necessary tax implications, but you also get to write off quite a bit as well.

Talk to a bean counter, it is a valid option for many businesses.

I was going to see if the purchase of a local business license and the use of one's SS# would suffice. Basically under IRS rules this constitutes a small business owner. I've filed that way for years. Of course you also have the option of going LLC and applying for an EIN #. It's according to what you are trying to do.

It's also going on day two and i still haven't heard from them. Think i will send Nicki a email with a link to this thread. The first problem with getting this issues lies with the law or interpretation of it i believe. The 2nd issue that is starting to bother me more than the first is what appears to be customer service or the lack of. I've promoted their services here for awhile now and to come to find out that i have been mistaken would be at the least disheartening. I would have to think that any business that is buying gold would not work with there customer base in some way to reach a resolution that would benefit all parties involve. Last i checked it was about making money.

With the huge price drop gold has experienced in the last few days I would bet they are being overwhelmed right now with people trying to get out of their material before it loses any more value. A lot of panic out there right now. They may just be incredibly busy at the moment.

lets say i get an EIN number and continue with ARA and use my personal bank account.. how would i show at the end of the year how much i spent and what my gain was if i dont use receipts?

After talking to John at ARA, the whole mess is because of Homeland Security supposedly trying to stop money laundering.

Homeland Security sure is helping keep us safe! I haven't been attacked, or had my identity stolen, and no one has tried to hack my telephone account and pay my bill for me since it was formed.

The precious metals industry has been plagued with cash transactions for years and became a magnet for laundering money. When 9-11 came along they saw a way to end it. The claim was terrorism was funded by laundered money, as was the drug trade. Anyway the Patriot Act provided the mechanism for the government to oversee the refining industry and limit, or at least document, cash transactions.

I got my Vendor's License in Ohio 16 years ago for $10.00. I used to have to renew it each year and pay a fee but the renewal is no longer required. I believe it now costs $25.00 (in my county) to get your license.

I do have to file a "Use & Sales Tax" return every six months. Most of my work is for a charity and they are tax exempt so my sales incur no tax liability.

I use that license to order things not related to the business and, since they have no financial impact on the business, those items don't need to be shown when I file my Income Tax return.

It is simply proof that you ARE a business.

yes, I just saw the new "application" on their website, as well as the updated FAQ section now saying that they no longer deal with the public. Very sad and disappointing indeed! Any updates so far? Any recommendations for other refiners? Us little people need some help here!

Well this gives an opportunity for one of our large refiners to step forward and state his/their offers.

I can understand the need for some regulation in a business that handles millions of dollars daily or even hourly but surely been a member of a respected forum such as this should surely give us the opportunity to be able to sell our hard earned metals, I seriously doubt most will be trading tens of thousands of dollars so I really can't see the problem.
Perhaps we will need to start inter trading within the forum with the end seller been a registered business so the metals can be put back into the market, if the buyers can make a small % then maybe it will work so long as the business is transparent, I can't see a problem, and perhaps an opportunity for whoever steps forward.

The really sad part is NTR even has made provisions and interruptions under the Patriot Act for the Sole Proprietor. Same thing i was trying to explain to them. Maybe they just don't want our business.

There was a day when they were on here trying to promote their business. I even remember how Nicki landed on here and got tangled up in some less than honest behavior. All was forgiven when the situation finally came to light. I have always promoted them for their at least half honest behavior and what i thought was good communication skills and customer service. I take pride in anybody i recommend, especially when it comes to business. The whole thing really just pisses me off and makes me feel stupid at the same time. I've contacted them 2-3 times through email and on the phone. I can't even get the courtesy of a response. No kiss my --- or nothing. I'm going to shut up now before i say to much.........................
