Any idea how much gold I would have gotten out of this?

I put it on ebay first and got $117 for it from a Intel collector in Norway.

Cool looking board! Definitely an oldie.

$117.00 / $1135 per troy oz * 31.1 gr per troy oz = 3.21 grams

Somehow, I think that those 72 chips might have yielded
more than 3.21 grams of gold but your were happy and
the buyer in Norway will be happy as well.

So, life is good and all is well in the world.

If you add in time to process and chemical cost, then deduct 5% loss on payout, it may be a wash and he may have done better that trying to refine the chips. Howerer, if there are other PM's to add in such as silver, He may have made some profit on the board had he refined it.

Either way, I don't think he got hurt by selling the board to a collector.

Just my thinking.

I've refined 1000s of pounds of those all gold side braze packages, usually from 14 leads to 40 leads. Those are 18 leads. The more leads, the lower the value per pound. I don't remember how many are in a pound, but I would estimate the gold value of those to be about $375 - $425/pound, or a little more, at a $1130 market. The only silver is in the silver solder holding the legs on. I don't know about the rest of the stuff on the board.

They are fairly simple to refine. Break them up a bit and use near-boiling 50/50 nitric on them until the only thing left is gold, gold braze, ceramic, and the silicon chip. Filter and rinse well or, allow to settle, decant, and rinse a few times by decanting. Some of the fine particles may be gold, so don't lose anything. Dissolve the gold plating and gold brazes in hot aqua regia. You'll know that everything is dissolved when the pieces of silicon chips become unstuck and will slide around freely on the pad. Try not to use an excess of acids. The silver can be recovered by putting copper in the nitric solution. The gold is recovered by treating the aqua regia as usual.
