I am currently selling to several jewelers, at spot prices. It's sometimes hard to keep up to be honest. Many times they sell me scrap and purchase refined metal at the same time. I have been also selling silver to jewelers.
I went from jewelery store to store to find customers, many of them explain how they have been doing business with the same people for 30+ years etc. In those cases just thank them and move on. Eventually, when other benchmen hear that your material is good and your prices fair, you will start getting referrals which is where I am at now. I also make special alloys of silver, I have one customer who is buying Palladium Sterling from me. Offering exotic alloys will also bring you business. Regular jewelry stores that make their own jewelry generally don't deal with a lot of silver, however if you talk to street venders, you can find a lot of them who do. Just this weekend I spoke with 7 street venders during a fair in Walnut Creek Ca. Out of 7 silver jewelers, 2 want to do business with me, and 1 already ordered. I also have spoken with street venders in San Francisco and Berkeley and have sold to many of them as well, and collected their sweeps/scraps to refine as well.
The first question I ask street venders is if they are making their jewelry out of Precious Metal Clay, if they are they generally have no waste to speak of and cannot purchase silver from you if they are using clays, unless you are making silver clay.
