I have spent about a week looking for an escrap refiner nearby. I found several websites advertising as such and looked up their address on google maps. What a farse. Modest homes or a small storefront. One party posts "no walk ins" on his website, (it's a condo). Another is also home to a lawncare business and medical business all from a smallish ranch house. I wonder how many people have fallen victim to these flippers? Everybody needs to eat, but why commit borderline fraud to do so?

Try boardsort.com they are in your state.
They have pretty good payout for most things IMHO. They are also very clear as to what they accept, and what they will pay for it.
Here are some hints that I have found to be helpful in dealing with them.
Using the guidelines from their website, work up a "shipment" for them. Remember, that you have to pay shipping to them, so try to make it all fit into a box, or all on a pallet, or all in your truck if you are going to deliver it in person.
Get your shipment ready to go, and THEN email them specifically what you have ready to go to them.
xxxlbs large socket motherboards
xxxlbs lithium ion batteries
xxxlbs harddrive logic boards
xxxxlbs gold plated connector ends
When you do it like this, they are quicker to get back to you with a quote for your material. I suspect they get so many questions, some I am sure that are stupid, and clearly answered on their web site, and some I am sure are legit, but they just cannot, or will not respond to them all.
A couple weeks ago, I got a pallet ready for them, sent my email to them, got their quote back, agreed on the price, set up truck shipping, sent them the tracking, and got paid the day after tracking said it was delivered. In my experience they pay in advance for smaller shipments, like 25lbs of HD logic boards sent USPS, but for a pallet full I have always got paid soon after delivery, and that is FINE with me.
Since I just do not have a proper place to recover/refine I pretty much have resigned to passing on the escrap to someone else to deal with it. I have been much happier ever since.

i would fall in that categorie ... if the money is good, stop complaining and sell... if not dont ridicule the poeple that are clearly struggling more than you to make an honest living

If you Google both my company's which are public corps, the address will come up as a private residence. Why would you assume that givin just that information they are not legitimate or professional in any way? My processing facilities are located elsewhere and is not public knowledge for the obvious reasons. Don't forget small business's are the backbone of this nation.

Well said. My practice address, http://tinyurl.com/chno84b, is not a place you'll find me, unless I'm picking up my mail. But I'm a full-fledged lawyer and will sue you all the same!! I operate out of my home and don't need a parade of clients to my abode!

T Dubcee,

When dealing with a refiner you will have to deal with fees up front, and per pound of material, as well as delivering the material to them. Sometimes it is better to just find the best price you can find and sell to them. Those buyers amass large quantities that make it worth dealing with the refiners.
I don't think 1400 lbs is enough to deal with a big refiner.

Jim

and, it all depends on what the 1400 lbs of "escrap" consists of. If it is all complete computers, monitors, printers, cable TV boxes, stereos, etc. (i.e., consumer level escrap with carcasses, etc.), you won't find many that would deal with that small a load. The amount of waste far outweighs the reward to separate, process and watch over that load.

If, however, it is 1400 lbs of 'telecom grade' (i.e., high grade, not just stuff out of telecom equipment like power boards!), then you MIGHT be able to get a refiner that would work with you, but still, not likely.

The lowest weight I've been able to go to the 'big boys' with is 2300 lbs and that included a large quantity of high-grade stuff. There's no question that having better load quality and more weight will get their attention - and a better price.

You can check around, but I'd say you are better off working with a consolidator (perhaps that is a better term for you to learn than "Bogus escrap refiners") to work with your < 1 ton loads. Or, perhaps you should BECOME one of the 'Bogus' people that adds to your already decent size load until you can qualify for working with the 'big boys'!

1400 pounds of motherboards will fit in my garden shed.
If I will get angry I can process that in few months. One man operation - I would strip them clean while watching TV.

You need to look up the definition of "refining" Most "bogus refiners" do refine e scrap to the best of their ability. Separating copper, steel, aluminum, plastic, PM bearing and wire..... to get the best deal at the bulk buyer. I will ask again....What do you have 1400 pounds of?

Not true with where he's going to take it Jim, there are no fees up front. It will come out of the settlement. And he should do quite well on 1400 pounds of mixed PCB's, they have a 500 pound minimum and the copper in the boards will pay for a big portion of the per pound processing fee. There are additional percentage fee's that I'm sure he knows of by now.

My escrap is quite varied. I have disassembled enough electronics and picked up enough junk to produce:

c. 200 lbs mixed motherboards
c. 50 lbs hard drive boards (I got a lot of HDs without PCs)
c. 22 lbs peripherial boards
c. 180 lbs telecom boards (mostly big old pbx boards full of goldtop chips)
c. 90 lbs silverplate items
c. 8 lbs silver contacts
RAM
processors
avionics
cell phones
auto computers
etc etc

Ive been a coin and jewelry guy for years. most of it is unclassified according to boardsort's buy list. i have very little steel or plastic and have pulled a couple hundred pounds of aluminum, copper, and bimetal heatsinks. i hope this answered you description of what kind of escrap. I'm handy with tools but I type with 2 fingers.

I also fall into your catagory and I am not a bogus farce. A lot of people start out flipping goods until they can grow bigger.
I easily "process" your 1400 pounds each month
