Greetings all.

I have access to several of these units. They are from building equipment and each contain 10 lbs of gray catalyst material. Normally I would sell them to my usual precious metal buyer, but he is nearing retirement and doesn't want to take on new projects.

Has anyone here dealt with units like this before? I'm willing to send out small samples to anyone here at no cost so you can XRF the material or do other simple analysis.

I think your name, Dr. Cadmium, has scared any refiners off. Perhaps if you post any information you have about the catalyst contained it will be helpful. Most refiners choose not to deal with Cadmium and if there is no cadmium in the catalyst, only in your screen name, it matters.

I didn't even consider that. This is an old name that I've used for years on another site and when I registered here 13 years ago, I've just never had a reason to post until now. As far as I know, this item contains no toxic metals. I am willing to pay for shipping to send a small sample to anyone. In the unlikely event it does contain toxic material, I will pay for the return shipping as well.

From what I understand, refridgeration catalyst recievers use aluminum, chromium, nickel powders. No precious metals.
I think you're right. In that case I'll take it to a local facility that has a LIBS gun and post the results here.

I'm posting this follow-up in case anyone is curious.

Short answer - This material is worthless for metal recovery.

Long answer - I had this material analyzed locally with an XRF and it came up as:

<1% copper
<1% manganese
no other metals detected

I also sent a sample to a lab specializing in precious metals, and there were no traces of gold, platinum, or palladium detected.

Thanks for letting us know, it's really appreciated.
