Took in my first batch of aluminum and copper wiring from computers to the scrapyard today, in it there was approximately 90 lbs of heatsinks, hard drive casings, etc that well... felt pretty solid to me, but they priced it as "sheet" aluminum... does this sound strange to you?

More in curiosity at this point as it's already sold and done, mainly just wondering if I should avoid this particular yard in the future is all.

PS feel free to move this if I posted in the wrong place mods :)

What they call it is not as important as what they paid you per pound. You did not mention the price, which would be the benchmark for determining whether you were treated fairly.

Well where did you take it? Scrap Central, Alters, Lakeside, Remelt? Heatsinks will go as clean extrusions if they do not have any steel attached to them and are not made out of folded sheet. HDD cases go as sheet and cast.

depends on whether they were anodized (colored) or not. anodized aluminum will be considered old sheet/painted aluminum no matter what type it is.if its mixed anodized/non-anodized they buy the whole lot as anodized sheet. if you had separated the clean from the anodized, you should have received two different prices.

Good advice Geo. I did not know that the anodized part made a difference. Thanks.

Cool, I was wondering about that Geo. To those that asked, I got I think $49 for 90 lbs of aluminum, and yes it was mixed painted/anodized/clean as I just wanted it and the copper gone so I have room to work in my workshop. I did have plans to soak it in some caustic soda to remove the paint but just ran out of time, and out of food for my kids is all.

Geo, if your yard it hitting you because your extrusions are anodized, you need to find another yard. My local yard never says anything about anodizing, as it is not paint.
