Hi hope all are having good holidays
not sure if I took a pic in the proper
Setting.
It is difficult for me to get a pic of what gold looks like to
My colorblind eyes and have it still look like gold in the pic
To the point I was. Bashing a few different flatpacks and I came
Across what looked like an extra long fet (not posative if it is but square
With 3 legs usually attached to an aluminum heat sink)
This one about an inch side to side with around 8 maybe 10 legs
and no heatsink
I did not get the numbers before I destroyed it sorry

It did come from a manufacturer's CD/radio which makes
me think nope
But do these pics look like gold (the other 4 or 5 flatpacks indeed
Had the gold bonding wires)

Thanks steyr223 rob

Really hard to tell... the big plate is definitely copper but the pins could be gold plated.
If in doubt, take a test tube with nitric acid and put a small sample in it. If it is gold plated you soon see the gold foils floating off.
If it is a larger surface just put a drop of nitric on it and it will lift any gold foils.

I have opened up some of those, some have gold bonding wires. Most of what you have is copper with the tip of each leg plated in gold and a bonding wire running from each leg to the die.

I like the test tube idea

The drop never worked for me as I still have to
differentiate between the colors copper and gold

Thanks steyr223 rob
You can still see the foils even if you can't distinguish the color. It will also give you an idea of how thick some gold foils are. Just like this...

No foils, no gold or extremely thin.

Thanks smack
Göran I still can't tell tell the different colors
but you emphasis on foils
I take it the crumbled up stuff on the edges are the foils
Cool (I guess I never tried a drop on gold but only copper)

I think you get it! 8)

Usually gold is plated on brass in electronic connectors so there isn't a lot of difference in color. But to my knowledge there isn't any other metal than gold used for plating in electronics that resists nitric acid and not loosing it's shine.

This test is naturally only working on plated materials. Thick plating could protect the metal below, but just make a scratch on the surface before placing the nitric there and the problem is gone.

On another note Rob, get some barrier cream or gloves sorted out. You'll have major problems with your hands if you don't.

thanks everyone

spaceships sorry about the late reply my truck broke a ball joint and during the incident my phone was broke while trying to keep the truck from flipping (it didn't)

believe it or not my hands were very dirty from sanding one of my net shapes that I weld together
and mirror image

I always were gloves when refining
actually I don't even remember the last time I did any refining maybe 3 weeks ago

thank you for your concern I do appreciate it

well off to fix my truck if it is still there
