In the Hoke book she says to place the acids that might have values into a earthenware or stoneware.
What would happens if you just put it into a plastic container

Depends on the container and the acid type. Nitric doesn't get along well with some plastics.

earthenware is not water tight,even glazed it can seep through. Stoneware is water tight but test first with a stoneware container weighed dry on a gram scale then fill with water and let sit over night. Pour out water wipe dry and re weigh. If the vessel weighs more after the test, that how much water is absorbed. Wyndham
 
True stoneware of the quality Hoke was referring to would be fully vitrified and impervious. Every now and then a very large acid barrel will turn up on eBay. Some are around 6 foot tall and were used as industrial plating and pickling tanks.
