I just bought some estate jewlery and one piece is a large gold plated necklace ,wich has jewls on it and gold leafs.,My question is,what metal is used to make the jewlery before it is plated?
I put a torch to a small section of it and it looked like solder melting out of it.

my belief most any metals can be plated, other countrys can use even mixtures of metals, could be lead, tin, pewter,----glass, ceramics, feathers, even leaves from trees can be plated with gold, usually a thin plate of metal that gold will plate to is plated onto base metal ect.

Are you talking about actual leaves from plants or, are you talking about those tiny decorative metal leaves that are put on so-called Black Hills jewelry.

keep in mind this is a large necklace 3in wide and weighs 27 grams the leaves are small decrative and made of metal but the entire thing is gold plated
