OK, I've been looking to gather a few supplies together and would rather (if at all possible) buy straight over the counter. I realise I can get lab grade from Ebay, but I dislike Ebay, nay hate Ebay, with a passion. Still spend a fortune on there, but anyone that has had to run the gauntlet of customer services will likely have some sympathy. Anyway, I digress ( a common meme for me), back to the point of the post which in the first place is acids.

One shot drain cleaner seems to be adequate for sulphuric acid at (IIRC) 91%. That seems a better idea than buying battery acid at much lower concentrations and having to concentrate it.

Hydrochoric acid seems a little more problematic - lots of patio cleaner on the market but most seem to have surfactants of various degrees involved. Is this likely to be a problem. Looks like 20-25% is about the best I can get without ordering online - is that likely to be OK for most (if not all purposes)? I've seen that using dilute AR still works, so I guess so, but I'm thinking of things like PGM testing solution etc too. Again could concentrate it I guess, but boiling acid doesn't seem too bright to me though I'm sure it can be done safely.

Nitric acid seem a little more problematic here. There isn't a surfeit of pool supply companies here and I'm struggling for a ph down from a hydroponic supplier that has a nitric option.

Am I better of just biting the bullet and buying from ebay at roughly £30 for a litre of each (I gather it goes rather a long way) or is there a sensible option over the counter.

It would help if you told us where in the UK you are, we have members from just about all over so one of us should be able to tell you where to buy the acids and other chemicals and equipment you need.
Most of the big chemical supply companies can supply acids but specialist companies exist who sell just chemicals and not all the equipment scientific establishments need so give us a location and we will see who knows the best place to go. You don't want to buy poor substitutes when you can get the real things easily and cheaply here.

Pretty much my point really. Sheffield is the location.

I don't want huge amounts though I would consider volume to save money. I guess really I'm looking for at least a litre of each and maybe 2 of each. I can get it from Ebay (cheaper than Reagent), but would rather a local source.

Theres got to be a supplier not far from you use google and the phone book... £30 a litre I'll deliver it personally for that! You have metal industries still so some one must be in the area supplying the trade with the acids and chemicals they need.

My thoughts precisely however I've not come across anything so far and I'm fairly adept at google (wouldn't have asked if I hadn't drawn a blank). There's a supplier of chemicals at Rotherham and I've yet to call them, but I have a feeling it will just be IBCs.

I meant £30 for 2 litres, not £30 per litre. If I buy 25 it's dirt cheap, but far more than I need.
