I did a google search and a few searches here on the topic. But still I wouldn't mind some opinions and first hand experience from the forum.

I am looking for good reputable Educational Institutions that offer a comprehensive program in metallurgical assaying. I found the BC Institute of technology offers a 2 year program with both in-class and online distance studies and the university of montana offers at least one course. However finding a college or university off google seems dubious at best, without at least some word of mouth endorsements.

So, Have any of you studied assaying in a formal setting? who offers the best programs? and who else is good? and if you are experienced in the subject, would you recommend schooling? in other words, is it necessary or useful?

any comment or advice you may have is welcome and appreciated.

Just in-case you are wondering, my boss wants to send me to study the trade and he will be paying the cost of education.

Call Mark at Legend. I'm sure he keeps up with what courses are available.

He also runs a fire assay forum. You could register there and post the same question.

I don't think New Mexico Tech does fire assay courses anymore.

Montana Tech, Colorado School of Mines and University of Nevada all still do I think.

Check out the British Columbia Institute of technology. They have a "Registered Assayer" Program

Hi there from Australia everyone :)
I'm guessing that the chances of getting an answer to this question are a little slim but as I'm a newbie to the forum and figured I had to start somewhere.

Does anyone know of an Australian option for learning & gaining a formal qualification as an Assayer?

As I say, I know it's a long shot but if anyone is going to know, I'm 99.99% sure that you guys (& gals) will, or at least be able to point me in the right direction.

Thanks for creating such an informative, educational and balanced resource for all of us basement/backyard P.M. refining enthusiasts.

There are universities in places like Perth, etc. where classes can be taken (I am not an Aussie but I have been to The Lucky Country).
But I am assuming that you would most likely be looking at self taught options.
This is a good reference on assay methods that can be downloaded.

Depending on your background in chemistry, you might also want to download and study some chemistry books from the same site (internet archive).
