very intresting, I have a few pieces like that around the house, never thought to research how they were made, I always just thought they were plain old antiques, I wounder can the gold be recovered, not that i would ever break them apart to do so, but its somethign to think about
 
As far as I have been able to determine, they use monoatomic gold, so it would seem the good old microwave technique may work. Haven't tried it yet, but soon.
 
The amount of gold recovered wouldn't cover the costs and the items would sell for much more than their metal values so my advice is e bay them and buy decent material to process.
