Has anyone used Garfield Refining (http://www.garfieldrefining.com/) before? You can supposedly trade in your buttons & what not for bullion and cash difference. I'm curious as to what % they pay.....

I used to live near the Philadelphia location and never
knew about it, probably drove by there plenty of times.
I have never heard about any dealings with them, but
the website makes them look professional. You can't go
by that, I know.

Maybe someone else on here has dealt with them. We'll give it a bit more time & see who else might chime in....

I have dealt with them in the past, unfortunately I have found them to be untrustworthy. I would suggest that you or any one else contact:

Gary Frenkel at Midwest Refineries
4471 Forest Ave.
Waterford, Michigan 48328
Toll Free 1-800-356-2955
http://www.midwestrefineries.com/

I have sent them Silver, Gold, Platinum, Palladium, and Rhodium. I have always been treated fairly, and always been paid quickly & accurately.

I have dealt with them (Garfield), I would stay away, far away. I sent in a lot of karat gold, they came back with a settlement , I said it was too low, they came back with a better settlement. I don't trust them.

I have not been happy with Midwest unfortunately. They told me a blatant lie.

I, too, was not pleased with Gary.

That's who told me that he lost several grams in the melting process. I was also told that 4N material was in fact 95% pure. It was a real shock to me, and it would also be a shock to Engelhard to know they put out such crap wire that when I melt it down it drastically loses purity.

I'm not easily convinced that platinum has a significantly high vapour pressure at its melting point, given the fact that I use and work with the material nigh on every day. Thankfully it was an ounce or so that I just wanted to get rid of so it wasn't worth the fuss of arguing over how badly handled the whole transaction was.

My advice is that if you're sending a small lot under 3 oz, look elsewhere. In my single (and last) experience with them, they did not pay out at their advertised %age.

I sent some jewelry scrap to Garfield. The lot total 5.8 ounces and was at last 1/3 karat gold. They acknowledged a fire assay bead of.82 ounces of gold and paid me $5.98 for it. No bigger theives have I ever meet.

I think he probably means "1/3 of it was Karat gold." What Karat combination it was, couldn't tell you. But even if it was only 8K, & w/ the various fees (assay, melting, weight, etc., etc.) that might have been tacked on, six bucks for almost an ounce must have been disappointing to say the least; larceny to say the most.

I send stamped scrap to Kitco, they may not "max" out my $$, but they're fast, I know what's up at all points of the transaction, and I lose no sleep. The rest I just accumalate for when all this info finally makes a dent in my thick skull so I can have fun myself with it.

Just for reference I sent in rings clearly marked 10 karat, 12 karat, and 14 karat yellow gold to 1/3 of the weight of th entire sample. As a side note Cash-4-Gold is run by Garfield and they are under major indictment in Hawaii for taking a client for thousands of dollars in stamped bullion.

Cash 4 Gold is advertised everywhere, I'm shocked at just the number of ppl on the board that have been screwed. Just imagine how many others there are....

Cash 4 Gold / Garfield should be punished for this

So I'm reading of all these places to stay away from, but I haven't really found any that seem to be honest & trustworthy. Somebody has to have some good luck with someone....anyone??

123preciousmetal.com??

It depends I imagine. I'm perfectly pleased w/ Kitco, but they only pay about 90-91% spot. Earlier someone mentioned who they like, others quoted bad experiences there. In my business, most of my customers are generally pleased w/ my services; however, some aren't. An old expression is Champagne tastes on a Beer budget...and of course there are many different qualities of beer to boot.,,lol !!

I guess what I'm getting at is no matter whom you're looking at you will probably find a bunch of happy customers and to a lesser extent (hopefully) a bunch of dissatisfied customers. But, I read the forum's creator's remarks not long ago that he would like to find a buyer @ 95% spot for 2 tozs a week and that another person's quest to find a higher than 97% spot on karat gold was probably not worth pursuing. I don't know what response he may have gotten through PM's but I don't recall seeing to many offers @ the 95% spot posted in response.

It depends what you're looking for I imagine. I hold no illusions that I should get more than what the reseller expects without any of the risks they hold...Kitco's never caused me to have a moments anxiety over anything, but, that's only my experience.

Cheers & good luck in your quest,
John

someone posted his results w/ Xstrata a couple/few months ago. seemed to be content w/ them if that helps any. maybe trying a search of various names would shed some light.

Yes, unfortunately. I sold a large amount of platinum to them. They do not live up to their word. I would not trust them, and I won't change my mind unless I receive no less than the $3,000 I was shorted when I sold the platinum. Their settlement was 10% lower than the assay that they performed. I was clearly screwed. I advise you stay away from them. Feel free to pass on this post to them. It's what they deserve.

I googled his address and found its a residential address. takes me right to a house on Watkins lake.

His setup, if professional is probably not better then what any of us could cobble up with a decent cash investment.

Yeah I know that.
That's the shipping address, the refinery is somewhere else.

It is like using a PO box as a shipping address.

The refinery is located in a commerical/industrial area.
