Anybody have any experience with this material ??

I'm told it is from a German Car manufacturing quality test application.

Next to impossible to scratch the plating ..

It is inside 2 glass tubes side by side .. maybe 1.5 inches wide and 12 inches wide

Interesting if nothing else ..

Thanks

Is the plating on only one side of the tube?
If it is then it is probably an IR reflector. I've seen this type of application with a halogen tube lamp and a gold plated back side to reflect all the heat.

I have seen this kind of tubes at a company here in germany in their showroom.
They produce quartz heating elements and some of the glass tubes are gold plated. They guy told me that they use the hereaus process which is a close-to-nothing plating. As far as I remember the purpose was to filter the emitted wavelength of the infrared light that is beeing produced by the quartz elements. They are used in fast drying car paint. Now all this long story has only relevance if those parts are what I said.

Short-wave Infrared lamps penetrate deep into the material such as to warm it up from the inside. Their main advantage is their fast action which warms the material directly and thus, energy saving without deviation over convection or thermal conduction. The main application fields are hardening and desiccation

Thats from the web link,

hardening and desiccation seems like paint shop to me,..
