Here's some info on the Gold Bug, including two patents. It's a mesh cathode of very high surface area made by electroless copper plating a sensitized porous polyurethane substrate. I've never used one but people that have says it works quite well. Many gold plating facilities use them to plate gold out of drag-out solutions. The Renocell is similar but I think it uses a porous carbon cathode.
