gold filled vs gold plated

This is a noob question. But, what is the diffrence between "gold filled" jewlery and "gold plated". Also, how would you go about refining scrap jewlery? Just nuke it in AR and pracipitate? Or are there more involved steps like there is in refining e-scap?
